um. even though this thread is all about war now, it would have been really cool if the president hadn't just condemned me to a life without running or jumping or a single day without a fuckload of pain. maybe stem cells wouldn't have proved effective anyways, but it's cool to have that hope, you know, not sink into despair about my organs failing me and all those lovely things.

he's only stopped federally funded research (and maybe not even that - ellen goodman noted that this veto has apparently successfully seperated the right wing from the looney right wing, and some of the regular right wing are not too thrilled about this.)

anyway - california voted in a huge program for funding stem cell research a year or so ago, and some other states are considering following suit - so don't lose hope yet.

Raise your hand if you ever latch onto one tiny part of a conversation and then veer wildly off course......

I thought the adult stem cells, the ones that are still in the okay column, were the ones that showed a lot of promise for back/nerve damage? The embryonic stem cells were the hopefuls for the parkinsons, etc as well as the nerve damage.

Adult stem cells are less potentially useful than embryonic because they're pluripotent, not totipotent. They can't turn into as many types of new cells.

Adult stem cells can also be cultured from the individual they're being used to treat. IE native cells, no rejection issues, would be nice.
