[] 3-day supply of water: at least 1 gallon per person per day
[] 3-day supply of non-perishable food
[x] Manual can opener and eating utensils
[] Supplies to care for your pets including 3-day supply of food and water, ID tags, proof of vaccinations, and veterinarian contact information (my cats are born hunters they can live off birds and rabbits)
[x] Flashlight
[x] Portable, battery-powered radio (actually I have a radio that you can wind up)
[x] Extra batteries
[] Basic first aid kit and manual
[x] Warm clothing and blankets
[] Whistle
[] Filter face masks (N95 rating)
[] List of emergency contact information
[] Photocopies of important documents (birth certificate, licenses, insurance information, etc.)
[x] Cash and coins
[x] Sanitation and hygiene items (hand sanitizer, moist towelettes, feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, etc.)
[] Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper: 9 parts water to 1 part bleach can be used as a disinfectant, 16 drops of bleach to 1 gallon of water can be used to treat water in an emergency (do not use scented, color safe, or bleaches with added cleaners)
[] Items for infants (formula, diapers, bottles, and pacifiers) if applicable
I guess I'm not that ready and here I thought all that was important was having a towel. |

My folks would do pretty well, I think. We have everything on that list except for the filter masks (and maybe the household bleach, but we have plenty of disinfectant, a water purification pump and a bottle or two of purification pills lying around, so we're covered there).
If things go South while I'm in Oregon, on the other hand, I'll be in some trouble. _________________ "Whatever afflicts thee, their asses I shall kick"

I can see why survivalists like Oregon, though. You could live more easily off the land here than almost anywhere. Especially if you like filberts. |

| Filberts, black and huckle berries, we still get salmon up our rivers, a near overpopulation of deer, relatively mild weather. Few MAJOR population centers. |

| The kid across the street just handed me some fish he had caught that day. I picked several small buckets of blackberries today. Plus, I have a zucchini the size of my thigh that was hiding under the Nasturtium. So pretty much, I'm set for the year. |

Certainly true. My problem is more that I don't have any of the gear for it at school. Between being in good shape and having been a Boy Scout for a lot of years, I'd probably do better than most folks, but I still don't relish the thought of making my way in a chaotic world with not much more than a camelback, some rope, a flashlight, and a pocket knife. _________________ "Whatever afflicts thee, their asses I shall kick"

i should try growing zucchini, just as a control vegetable. my garden currently has one italian pepper and one and a half tomatoes. i blame a cold june followed by an overheated july, but i am beginning to suspect it might be me.
i actually have a good stock of water (what with getting water delivered, i always seem to have an extra case or two on hand) and canned goods (what with shopping at costco - yay, 15-packs of tuna!)....which probably means i will be murdered the first night by the ravening hordes. _________________ aka: neverscared! |

I say we turn these menaces into a fuel source.
Also I wouldn't find Oregon so hot. I hate filberts. |

mousie, I suspect your downfall will be your kitties. World-wide disaster strikes and services are predicted to be not restored for a month. You think, "Ok, I have a can of tuna a day... I can do that".
Day 1: "Oh, it is angelina kitten's birthday. Dear, sweet kitty, you get a can of tuna! Oh oogie oogie kittums, have another!"
...
Day 17: "Damn." |

So do we. Everybody hates filberts over here. Seriously, like, everybody.
