are there any forums out there with "penalty boxes"?

like, a public humiliation list of temporarily suspended morons?

the digital stocks. forumgatory.

except around here, there are people who would actually try to get in there.

actually, that could be amusing.

I know of a forum karma system. People can vote on each post and give it a plus or a minus. I don't recall if the net score actually had an effect on anything, though, and I don't think that system was set up for this bb system.

If it did have any consequences, that might be a good substitute for a minimalist mod. Or not.

slashdot.org has sort of a self-moderation system where you can set a rating threshhold, where posts that don't reach your threashhold are collapsed by default and posts that do meet it are expanded. it's kind of neat and seems pretty robust. i mean hell, every single topic goes into the hundreds of posts and the site is followed by a few hundred thousand people every day.

We've survived for years without mods... they're really overrated. Back "in the day" (see, now we'll get to talk about Keen like we used to talk about "when the forums were yellow") we just beat trolls soundly about the face and head and then ignored them.

We don't really need rating systems (we know who the idiots are) and karma (in this sense) is entirely subjective and thus open to as much abuse as "moderatorship". Having mod'd for talkcity.com "professionally" in the past, I'll just say that less oversight is better than more, IMHO, and there's a reason I'm not there but have stayed here. The forum will sink or float based on the quality of our combined contributions, not the ability of a few individuals to keep the extremes at bay. That just guarantees us mediocrity.

Amen to that! The laissez-faire attitude really defines this community. Well, that and the raging hormones.

One of the best summaries of this forum community I've ever heard.

I read this quick, was gonna comment about how http://www.rottentomatoes.com/ is now a Newscorp subsidiary (like IGN and Myspace), but then re-read it.

well i was disappointed when "that girl" appeared in the forums here this afternoon......

perhaps that is the one simple reason a mod is needed......

Surely you're being ironic? Smile

All in all, we're pretty good at it. Of course, sometimes, trolls are fun to play with. ;p

Is it really such a bad thing that we've had to learn to moderate ourselves?

When did we learn to do that?

Actually, we do it fairly well.

If we want controlled and mederated forum we can go elsewhere... many elsewheres. Sinfest is the exception, not the rule.

Not that there aren't non-moderated forums out there. But with very few exceptions (I'm thinking about one squiddley once mentioned because I haven't found another myself, but if he found one there's bound to be at least a couple others), they are truly chaotic, school-yard bully type environments where anything really does go and it is basically survival of the fittest in the meanest sense of the phrase. Things like the yiff invasion, tatyana's pictures, and hitler's abortion pictures (not to mention avatars of goatse, tubgirl, and the like) are the norm, not the exception.

*shrugs*

Sinfest isn't the only forum I visit... but it's the one I visit daily and often multiple times a day. The other forums I go to are all moderated and that's part of the reason I don't want to be there as much. The other unmoderated ones I used to go to (well, still do a couple times a year maybe to visit) I don't anymore because it's all just a big show and no real content.

Mabe I'm debating a useless topic here, whatever will happen, will happen. It just makes me sad that people don't seem to appreciate the special thing we have here and want to cage it up.
