I know it's supposed to be smaller, but the iPad just screams "MINI TABLET" to me.

Maybe it's just me, but when I see a tablet my first thought is "How is the handwriting recognition software?"

I've seen no mention of the iPad supporting anything of the sort.

The iPad won't work quite as well as the iPod or iPhone for one single reason: it's being positioned as an eBook reading device with cool things in it that make it less than a netbook and more than an iphone... however, the eBook reading culture has not yet spread as much as mp3s and cell phones were when the iPod and iPhone were launched (I'm talking worldwide here).

Of course, Apple could help with eBook penetration (and that's good for my business!) but even before iTunes access to mp3s were massive (at least illegaly) and even before the App store, everybody had a cell phone. I'd be really interested in knowing how many people even have the Adobe Acrobat Reader and how that compares to illegal mp3 downloading and cell phone penetration before Apple launched those two products.

All of this aside from the fact that, when compaing numbers, not many people have a Kindle. I'd have to agree with whoever said the iPad is three-five years early.

Nexus One has apparently been having a lot of issues... various glitches and such. I like iphones for the apps - which are ridiculously useful when you have data access - but I'm also very impressed with the Android operating system. Personally, I'd wait on the Nexus One... maybe a Nexus Two, or just firmware updates to clear up issues.

Do you have any examples?

But the android store has apps aplenty, right?

Android does have its own version of the App store, with a pretty significant library of apps. It's just a lot smaller than the iPhone App Store by comparison, but really, unless you've heard of a specific app for the iPhone that you absolutely must have the exact same one, chances are good that you'll find a similar one on Android.

EDIT: If you are curious, you can peruse it here. http://www.android.com/market/

Actually one of the big problems with ereaders is that the theoretical leader, Amazon's Kindle, hasn't released their numbers.

Wiki wrote:
The exact sales numbers were not released by the company, but according to some estimates based on official statements it is estimated that as of Q4-2009 there were about 1.5 million devices sold.
Amazon e-book sales overtook print for first time on Christmas Day of 2009.

It isn't worded well above but they mean that Christmas Day sales only were really, really high on e book sales (certainly people filling their new ereaders with ebooks).

It is this kind of information that makes people think that ereaders could be a steady market, even if it isn't as viral as a ipod or iphone.

As for the rest of it, mp3 access and cell phone penetration, that honestly sounds like a semester paper at least. I might start looking into it but we might have better luck with the idea if we look into technical papers on the subject.

Amazon is opening up the Kindle for content development.

Kindle Development Kit For Active Content

Quote:
Pricing Options
Active content will be available to customers in the Kindle Store later this year. Your active content can be priced three ways:

Free Active content applications that are smaller than 1MB and use less than 100KB/user/month of wireless data may be offered at no charge to customers. Amazon will pay the wireless costs associated with delivery and maintenance.
One-time Purchase Customers will be charged once when purchasing active content. Content must have nominal (less than 100KB/user/month) ongoing wireless usage.
Monthly Subscription Customers will be charged once per month for active content.
Active content applications have an upper size limit of 100MB. Applications larger than 10MB will not be delivered wirelessly but can be downloaded from the Kindle Store to a computer and transferred to the user's Kindle via USB.

Okay, so they haven't opened it yet but they are looking for applications for people who want in on the "limited Beta." I noticed it because someone suggested that Goodreads make an app for being able to rate and review for Goodreads directly on the Kindle.
