True. That has occured to me, too. Of course, the sitting member would also be subject to a term limit.

I'm also curious about the idea of making the required time out of office equal to or longer than the term limit. I would like to think it would force politicians to learn to exist in the real world. I suspect, however, that they would just work in a non-elected position in the political machine.

Politicians should be forced to do hard labor after serving their term.

Maybe we should cut their pay in half and make them work in cubicles rather than cushy offices. There must be some motivation that keeps them going back. Can we eliminate that motivation, or at least limit it?

Oh, and I have to acknowledge whoever mentioned using a general campaign finance pool (mouse I think.) I find the Supreme Court ruling on financial contributions being free speech. Sounds like a case of some people having more free speech than others.

Or possibly fixing the tax rate so it cant be muddled with, then absorbing all their wealth into the governments coffers, which they'll get back as long as they dont run us further into debt, with a bonus if they manage to garner a surplus.

or do what my new congressman did - spend 6 profitable years as a lobbyist, making all _sorts_ of new friends.

i'm voting with dro's "hard labor" plan. no more country-club prisons, say i!

ooo, ooo, ooo! or make congressional seats minimum-wage positions! that way, they _have_ to keep doing regular jobs to keep going...and maybe develop a _lot_ more sympathy for the little guy.

I believe that the state govn't positinos in MN are actually part time gigs and most do have other jobs. I think that we should do something along those lines. minimum wage and only work for 6 months a year. Get the damn jobs done instead of spending too much time bickering and doing "feel good" speeches (and this goes for both sides.)

Or maybe a pre-job wage cap on one senatorial seat and a percentage of the representative seats per state so that we actually get people in there that have a clue about how the poorer folks live.

I dont know about required hard time but if i may present my totally unrealistic and probably impossible plan. All congressional and presidential canidates running for reelection or just simply at the end of their term must be subjected to an independant criminal investigation to ensure they have not abused the position or you know, killed an interns. If they havent they get to run again. If they have then they go directly to jail and do not pass go. again probably really stupid and asinine but at least wed get to watch them squirm. and boy do i like watching politicains squirm.

actually, what they need is to be subject to an independent audit. a surprising (well, maybe not so surprising) number of them come out with a lot more money than they went in with...
