I really don't see what the fuss is about, Monkey. I'm not expecting you to cry about this or anything. From what you're saying, I'd say you do feel bad about these events, seeing as you're prepared to work against it happening again.

And that's all I expect people to do about it, really. Make sure shit like that doesn't happen again. It's not foolproof, but I reckon that educating people about events like this encourages them to be more progressive, for lack of a better word.

That said, I doubt this forum needed it. The few people that didn't know about this probably weren't going to need much of a push left anyway. But on fora like Something Awful, I'm sure it had at least a bit of an impact.

And I knew that he didn't get what I meant. I just didn't feel like explaining it to him, as it would've probably had little effect.

Maybe maybe not, What willem, do you recommend that a currently alive person living paycheck to paycheck born after the events happened actually DO about atrocities committed in the past?

Because from where I sit, being aware that it happened, and being prepared to work against it happening again is pretty much it. Sitting around dwelling on past issues and 'feeling bad' does little more than increase the amount of unhappiness in the world. When I feel empathy for a homeless person on the street i can buy him a sandwich or give him some money. When an organization actually working to fix a problem I feel empathy for approaches me I can donate money or time. What reaction other than "Damn that sucks" can you expect from horrible shit from the past being brought up. What exactly do you expect people to DO about it?

Well, there was the coup attempt in Venezuela in 02 with US backing, the coup attempt in bolivia in 08 with US backing and the successfull coup in honduras. So not so much history as happening right now. In chile the pinchetistas are in government again and ther's been an attempt to ban the communist party, not to mention the deeply undemocratic nature of the Over House, which is unelected, for life and dominated by the military.

Wow, you are one gullible pup.

It's actually a little sad.

I assume you think you're clever. Let me let you in on a little secret: you're not.

I have always been unsure about Allende. Things could be more ambiguous than it seems to be. I'm inclined to file the guy as "socialist myth" like Guevara.

Praising Allende is made much easier as we will never know WHAT would have been the effects of his politics.

On the contrary, we know all the good that Pinochet produced. I feel more empathy for his victims (and their families) than for a few contraried revolutionaries who still hope the proletarian internationalism will come from Chavez.

I am hoping proletarian internationalism will come from Chavez? Eh, no not really.

Allende and the popular front government clearly made mistakes, after all it was they who appointed Pinochet as head of the army, in attempt to appease the right, assuming they'd respect the constitution.

Well, yes we do know the effect of Pinochet and the countless of other military regimes the U.S propped up. Chilein particular is interesting because there Milton Friedman and his neoliberal theories had direct influence through his students and himself acting as an advisor to the regime.
