Here's my arena strategy:

1) Use every command. The game works by picking out key words from what you type. So if you put in "hey stupid hero, why don't you try a heal for a change, I'm tired of watching you lose!", it will pick out the word "heal", and have a small chance of making your hero heal themselves. So to maximise your chances of a command working, use every command you can thinking of. My command was:

"hit harder! attack! strike! kick! punch! smite! destroy! pray! kill! heal! rest!"

That filled up the entire command buffer, and every one one of those words was a keyword that could be picked out.

2) Use a command every turn, right from the start. Maximises your chances of a good outcome.

3) Always keep more than 25% godpower - you never know when you need to emergency heal.

4) Always keep more than 60 health. If you're under 60, someone can triple hit you if they're lucky (punish, normal hit, extra hit), and then your game is over.

5) Punish as soon as they go under 60 health for the same reason. Since you're always doing a voice command, you're more likely to do so much damage they can't recover. Keep punishing every turn as long as they're under 60 health. They won't be able to heal fast enough to keep up with your damage.

That strategy works for 90% of fights and you rarely need to use more than 3 charges. Right now my heroes are 73/5 and 62/3 wins to losses.

The only people it doesn't work against are chain punishers. For them, you can tell what they are, because they punish on the first go they can, and usually have an evil alignment. To win against them, you just have to keep chain encouraging until either you die, or their punishes backfire enough so you have more than 60 health, and they have less than 60 health. Then you switch to punishes and finish them off as above.

And that's my guide to winning at Godville! Smile

um...let's see...73+5+62+3=143 battles, and you introduced us to this game about 41 days ago, but you have to be at least level 10 to go to the arena, which means....

....you are _definitely_ spending too much of your life on this game, dude.

The randomness of this game just annoyed me.

My heroine had 2 invites to Godville. I told her to examine one. On the second or third try, she did, and I went +1 on my invites. Spend 15 more godpower getting her to examine the other one.

Both times that she followed instructions, I got the same message in her diary:

Wyoming Knott wrote:
Spent several minutes staring at the invite to Godville. Then tried to examine the item, but only broke it.

The second time, however, I went -1 on my invites.

Sonofabitch. What a waste of time and godpower.

In other news, our unity rank is up to 35.

I always have the invites added without doing anything to the actual item. Though they go away once the hero sells it.

i try to choose an active player and add them to my friends list, since about 1 in 4 times there's some moderate benefit to meeting a 'friend' who's online at the same time

Was just in the arena, and was getting my ass handed to me for the entire match. It was a dark-align facing my light-align and he was pounding me with punishes, was one level above me, and I was able to hold him off with encourages and used all my charges, and got to take him out in the end. Lovely!

Don't forget 2 weeks in China when I couldn't play (much)..! Aw, it's not that bad. I played maybe 3 battles a day on each character. It didn't take long (usually).

Anyway, now imagine what I was like when I played Everquest... :-p

You know, that strategy of yours does nothing for me. It makes me spend way more godpower (where before I'd use one or two charges) to get only slightly better arena results. Then, once the fight is over, it takes about 2 days to refill my godpower tank (first 3 charges) causing all my ratings to drop due to massive inactivity...

It also makes the opponent far more eager to take action

So yeah, going back to minimal interference fighting Smile

Oh, I forgot to say, you only need to use that strategy when your opponent is active...

My evil hero just took on a guy in the arena who was carrying around OVER 7,000 GOLD COINS.

Kicked his arse, +1 gold brick; serial punished Willie, +2 gold bricks.

It took all of my godpower to beat that guy, but I got three gold bricks in the process.

Fuckin' A!

That makes sense. Giving it another go now.

Then again... I just found this code in a project I'm working on:
Quote:
public function getSalt()
{
if (JS::isAjax())
{
//Strike! Hit! Heal! Pray! Hit harder! Heal! Pray! Skills! Heal! Pray! Strike now!
$challenge = sha1(time().rand(0,123456));

I have found that using: hit harder! attack! strike! kick! punch! smite! destroy! pray! kill! heal! rest!

In conjunction with chain punishing to be much more effective to fight with.

I got pulled into a fight (not arena) and just killed the other hero.

Ooh my main hero got a pet while I was away not paying any attention to him! Good to know that he can do SOME things on his own.
