Technically it was a 5.8 earthquake that was felt as a 3.6 in New York.
Where all the media tend to hype things.
( 10 ^ 6.1 ) / ( 10 ^ 5.8 ) = 1.99526231
By a half apparently. |

It wouldn't be news in Cali. |

on the other hand, today I learned it's the biggest on the east coast in 114 years. _________________ 88 NPH |

Speaking of.. the actual earthquake epicenter registered as a 5.8 (it got brought back down from a 5.9).. yet, hundreds of miles away up in New Jersey, the USGS said they experienced a bunch of 5.somethings as well as even a 6.1 in one city from our earthquake in Virginia. Blows my mind that it was able to radiate out like that.
(Also, my office was updated to 5.0 for what I experienced.)
So, here's a pic of a friend's home in Louisa, VA that he came home to after work yesterday.
And here's one of a friend's friend's classroom at Louisa County High School.
And here's a picture of the ONE misplaced item from my entire apartment that I was able to find.
The horror! |

damage is related to how much the building codes insist on earthquake-resistant structures (and how well the code is enforced). a 5.9 is nothing here, where we expect regular earthquakes and the buildings are constructed to withstand them. in a place where you don't expect earthquakes, and so don't build with withstanding them in mind - yeah, you can get some pretty severe damage. sounds like the east coast pretty much managed to avoid that, though. all i heard on the news was about some bits that fell off the national cathedral.
{edit} ok, so apparently i missed the whole second page....but you see what i mean, we californians know how to load our shelves and stuff. and make ceilings. _________________ aka: neverscared! |

You're still mostly right. That damage was from within 10 miles of the epicenter.. Back here in Richmond I haven't heard of any serious damage. |

Willem seems to be a bit tired of Belgian politicians. Look on the bright side, at least they're back from their inexplicable 3 week holiday. |

The earthquake for me was an after thought when it happened and continues to be an after thought as I have my eye on Irene. _________________ "Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid" ~ SGT John Stryker from "Sands of Iwo Jima". |

I'm pretty sure we'd all be fucked if I felt an earthquake (without traveling for quite some time, anyway).
Good luck, E-boy. |

It was definitely stronger then the 4.3 that I experienced in st. louis a few years ago. Me and my roommate had a pretty funny back and forth when it happened.
Me: You feel that?
Him: Yeah...Earthquake?
Me: Yeah.
