Especially on these forums. Hell, you're lucky if it stays on topic past HALF of the first page.

Also, ANYONE, anyone anyone anyone anyone anyone who actually uses the the words "lol. Just saying." is basically admitting that everything they said prior was just them talking out their ass.

I found this article and I had to look closely to tell that they weren't the same model, and that's size 12 vs. size 2. I certainly wouldn't consider the size 12 one to be "plus size." I mean, dang, we're not talking Rubens here.

While I'm all for more variety in media's portrayal of women, that article really rubs me the wrong way. Like, I want plus size girls, I want skinny girls, curvy girls, flat girls and what ever girls to be portrayed. All of them, all types of girls.

And you know what I DON'T want with my wonderful progressive change of women's portrayal in media? For stupid tabloids to nitpick them all and tear them all down.

Like, okay, we finally make enough progress to get a size 12 girl into a magazine and what do they decide to write about? "TELL US WHO'S BETTER" UGH. Fuck you, health.com, fuck you.

(Sorry ChastMastr, this rant is not directed at your or your commentary, which I really don't have issue with. Just an article inspired rant.)

agreed

i know a few girls who eat tons and are bony as hell regardless. it'd be a bit of a slap to the face for the media to be all like "hey, now this more full-bodied chick is way sexier than you" (they're also quite short, so they're not the stereotypical anorexic model type--double slap). we've all got a body type and whatever that is, it should be okay

The q thing? Like "QQ" over and over and over again? or Queue.. yes I suppose that would work just as well too?

I contend they do have to just appear, or changes have to just appear, as the old saying goes; "only nothing comes from nowhere," and the image being perpetuated had to start somewhere, and with some reason.
The kids also have to want to cling on to those images and internalize them, over other images. I mean, we are confronted with a million different body images from people who are treated with great respect.. the Twiggy's the world over to the Roseanne's. God knows even today I can't turn on the TV and flip more than 10 channels without seeing one twig and one obese woman. So saying "oh.. well.. that was just socialized! that's the reason that specific image is so popular!... is kind of a cop out. The image has to come from somewhere, and then they have to make a choice as to which one is attractive, and then there is a reason.. usually a deep seeded societal and genetic reason, that one of those is more attractive than the other.

Though..
That's also interesting that size zero has been banned from catwalks. Maybe that is another direction to take it.. though a bit offensive in some regards. Like size 0 women can never ever ever be models there.. lol.

Oh, and a Size 12 woman, definitely a + Size girl. Which is fine, lots of guys like + Women.

it's not a cop-out if it's reality.

especially since your very admission that you can't flip on the TV and not see these images of ultra-thin women touted as beautiful is in fact further evidence for the claim that these images come to us and get ingrained in us through socialization. they are everywhere. we are bombarded by them beginning with our earliest years. it's a very far-reaching explanation and you haven't really done anything here to challenge it.

it is not really about "wanting to cling to certain images," anymore than children choose to learn a particular language or choose to learn gender roles. it isn't about choice at all. that's why it's also called "indoctrination."

so you're just not understanding what "socialization" means.

My way of making poutine:

1. Make french fries first. Homemade or oven baked doesn't really matter, oven baked tends to be easier and generally safer (grease fires aren't fun).

2. Make up some beef-based gravy. I like using the drippings from roasts or you can use beef bullion. Bisto makes a nice, decently thick/rich gravy.

3. Put fries in oven safe bowl, top with some salt+pepper (A bit of garlic powder can be delicious!), throw in your preferred cheese blend, mozzarella is great but mixed mozza/cheddar blends can be really nice too. Top off with gravy.

4. Throw it in oven @350 degrees Fahrenheit for ~5 minutes.

5. Remove from oven and enjoy delicious potato, gravy and melty cheese goodness. Watch out though, because it can end up being about a billion and a half degrees in the center and burning yourself is no fun.

Also, more on topic:

I wonder if people would be so engrossed with women being "ultra thin" if they saw how much some such people suffer to get there. Having known some people with eating disorders and people with metabolism issues... it's not pretty. Anorexia, Bulimia... not good.

E: By posting the recipe for delicious poutine, I feel I have done my part in the fight against the ultra-skinny image. Laughing

out in the real world, plus sizes are generally size 18 and over. the woman shown, and size 12's in general, are _not_ plus sizes. (the fact that the EmptyOne thinks it is tells you about all you need to know about him & women).

.....so you stick the poutine in the oven for a few minutes? that makes sense, and helps deal with the speed with which french fries cool off.

Indeed, but that was what was intended by the poster in question.
