I don't quite view it exactly as in The Great Divorce, but I do adhere to the doctrine suggested by Lewis that the door to Hell is locked on the inside, rather than the outside, and that if someone wants to really come out and experience forgiveness and grace, God is eager to do so--but they continuously refuse. (Or even that the pain and fire of Hell is simply the experience a soul has of the light of God's goodness and love, but rejecting it and experiencing it in a negative way, which is held by many Eastern Orthodox Christians.)

Scholars? You mean heretics. The only place I've encountered this finite hell theory is Piers Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series.

A heretic can only be heretical with respect to orthodoxy. As there is no central authority for all of Christianity to define orthodoxy, we probably shouldn't be too casual in naming people heretics.

"Finite hell" isn't really that rare of a position. An eternal hell would obviously be incompatible with universalism and annihilationism, both of which have plenty of supporters nowadays, as well as back in the first couple of centuries postChrist, before Catholicism did its best to make itself the One True Faith.
