I believe Gainax continues to re-release Evangelion in the hopes that everyone finally realizes what a steaming pile of shit it was. </threadbait>
The last really good anime series I've watched is Axis Powers Hetalia: it's clever, funny, and doesn't take itself seriously. On the flip side of the coin I always enjoyed Mind Fuck anime such as Lain, Texhnolyze, and Paranoia Agent. |

Yeah, about that last one. I love (loved?) Kon Satoshi, but Paranoia Agent, the fuck. So many branching storylines. Kid with rollerblades and a baseball bat. By the sixth episode, I had no idea what was going on. By the end of it, I can't decide whether it smacked you in the face with pure genius or pure insanity. Mind fuck, indeed. (I've not seen the others fully, unfortunately. Not much streaming to be had in '98, nor '03 for that matter.) _________________ "Apparently so. I tried re-watching it again, it was not very fun or enjoyable. |

So I watched the first couple of episodes of Bokemonogatari (Ghost Stories, "-gatari" means stories about, like Katangatari was about katanas. . .) and it's visually WHOA! this is different. . . but that story. . .not sure yet. I mean it's good, but I can't say it's great yet. I've seen a bunch that impressed me in the first couple of episodes but then were disappointing there after. That said, the way they told the story visually was still stunning. It's supposed to be a collection of short stories, so maybe some will be better than others. _________________ ...if a single leaf holds the eye, it will be as if the remaining leaves were not there.

It's a decent enough romance story, but animation and pacing wise? Bad in most of the arcs. |

I've always enjoyed evangelion. The biggest problem with it has always been the ending. I never did the research myself, but I heard that they ran out of money near the end of the project, and if you watch it that explanation makes sense. It feels like they were running around like crazy people trying to tie up all the loose ends.
Also, and I'm honestly not trying to be a jerk but maybe you missed out on some of the religious subtleties that made the series so enjoyable for me (I spent the first year of college as a religious studies major before I realized that wasn't really the right fit for me). I like how the anime mixes up so many religions so that in the world of NGE each of them got some of it right but not all of it.
Also as a side note I don't claim to understand everything in the series. =p I feel like in order to really understand it you have to have a pretty decent understanding of not just religion, but also philosophy and physics. I'm okay in the last two but I haven't gone down either of those rabbit holes deep enough to really get the subtleties NGE has in it. |

Yo Falkonn, I'm really happy for you, Imma let you finish, but Evangelion was as subtle about religion as a brick is to the face.
Also watch Mushi-shi, and Kino no Tabi for a thoughtful, subtle take on philosophical quandaries. |

C'mon Kame, give bricks some credit, some are far more subtle than Evangelion. _________________ The older I get, the more certain I become of one thing. True and abiding cynicism is simply a form of cowardice. |

Didn't the director admit he only added the religious symbolism because it looked cool? He didn't give a fuck about the cultural richness it added.
Also Falkonn, you sound like you just started learning these things. |

This is awesome. And yes a lot of the religious overtones in NGE are extremely overt, but not all of it. Like the references to Jewish Kabbalism that most people would miss. I'm just saying that the less overt references added depth to the series that I enjoyed is all. |
