National news....
This just in, a socialist candidate manages 27% of the vote vs a democrat when no republicans register to run in opposition! _________________

28% now. More than twice what any of the previous (Republican) challengers have managed and this while being outspent 1 to 10 basically.
Or in the words of The Stranger:
Quote: | Actual Socialists
No, Socialist Alternative challenger Kshama Sawant didn’t manage to beat House Speaker Frank Chopp, but she made the most of her opportunity and she got 27 percent of the motherfucking vote, according to the first day of ballot returns. It seems her socialist ideology isn’t all that toxic after all. |
So looking promising for next years local elections. _________________ A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want? ~Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

Well it is interesting in that 27% isn't a small amount. So clearly socialism lives more than some people would suggest.
On the other hand, it's only 16k people in a district of 46k in a state of nearly 7 million people. There was no republican running in opposition because they have no hope of ever winning.
Also, I wouldn't consider a socialist losing the election for representative in the state-house in one of the most liberal portions of the US exactly national news. Legalizing weed in Washington is national news, a socialist losing to the speaker of the Washington House isn't. _________________

Well, there was this SP-USA candidate that got elected to a schoolboard in Red Bank, NJ with 50%+ of the vote and some 1000 votes too.
But hey this is just the beginning. And again, 28% is more than the Republicans have ever managed against Speaker of the House Frank Chopp.
So like I said, looking forward to the locals and mayoral elections in 2013. _________________ A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want? ~Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray |

Kinda missing the point, but OK.
All this proves is that in one of the most liberal sections of the nation a socialist can almost maybe get a third of the available vote, when there isn't a risk of a republican candidate taking the election. _________________

Of course it is, Republicans aren't going to win that part of Washington. My point is is that this isn't national news and not terribly interesting from the perspective of someone not heavily involved in socialism.
This is the beginning, and it's a very small beginning. So small in fact that you can't draw the conclusion that it's going to grow instead of decline. For all we know this is the most socialism is ever going to get in the US. _________________

Or that socialists, even with a shoestring campaign, still are able gain more than twice the amount of votes standing against Speaker of the House Chopp than the Republicans have ever managed there, and this on the first time. So hopefully more socialists will start building local election campaigns. Certainly Kshama Sawants campaign has made waves in Seattle at least. _________________ A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. Socialist constituencies aren't the same as republican constituencies. It isn't a statement on the nation at all man...its a statement on this one district in one of the most liberal states in the nation. This is what you're not getting. Even if she wins, she's going to have to figure out how to reconcile her ideals with the need to be able to work with a state government that is frankly, pretty damn full of republicans too.
Edit: it's very easy for socialist candidates in america to take their stands on principle when they don't actually hold the office and don't have to work with people who have a diametrically opposed political view to get things done. _________________

Back into international waters: Syrian opposition groups sign coalition deal
By itself, it's not a big thing. Civil war is still raging on (although it looks like the govt. side is loosing), refugees are pouring into Turkey/Lebanon and the later place threatens to have it's own civil war in the near future.
But it shows the impetus is still on the rebel side, Darth Putin will have the hardest time defending his veto power on security council as this sncencompass a good deal more than one faction/backup. Methink they're playing a loosing game out of one "democratically' elected tsar; go Russia, way to show us how to fail. As ripple effetcs involves Iran, Israel, Turkey, Russia as main actors and others as second fiddles this is quite the most important event of this starting century.
That said, I'm not sure that's good news for the western powers. It's most likely that Syria will turn into another Yugoslavia, splitting into separates culturally united states with minor groups unwilling to work together (like Serbia/Kosovo). Add a spice of local fanaticism and you get a large serving of terrorist harbouring stew. _________________ 我的氣墊船è£æ»¿äº†é±”éš |
