How about we talk about an averted catastrophe:
Cops: Man plotted attack during 'Twilight' movie
Quote:
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A southwest Missouri man accused of plotting to shoot up a movie theater during the new "Twilight" film was charged Friday after his mother contacted police, telling them she worried her son had purchased weapons similar to those used during the fatal Colorado theater shooting.y, saying she worried that with this weekend's opening of the final film in the popular Vampire movie series, her son "may have intentions of shooting people at the movie," police wrote in the probable cause statement.

. . .

Lammers was questioned Thursday afternoon and told authorities he bought tickets to a Sunday "Twilight" screening in Bolivar and planned to shoot people inside the theater. The town of roughly 10,000 people is about 130 miles southeast of Kansas City.

According to the probable cause statement, Lammers also planned to "just start shooting people at random" at a Walmart store less than a mile away. He said he'd purchased two assault rifles and 400 rounds of ammunition, and if he ran out of bullets, he would "just break the glass where the ammunition is being stored and get some more and keep shooting until police arrived," investigators wrote.

Trufax.

I drawdled a comic about this.

Apparently he's been committed before for threats of violence and what not. The lack of adequate mental health care in the US is SO not an issue. Rolling Eyes

and we had this conversation before in 2011/2010/2009/2008/2007/2006/whichever previous mutual Israeli/Palestinian murder of defenseless civilians you want to consider

Since it shouldn't go completely un-noted, especially since this seems more like just the beginning:

Israel strike kills 11 civilians in Gaza

Quote:
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) An Israeli missile flattened a two-story house in a residential neighborhood of Gaza City on Sunday, killing at least 11 civilians, mostly women and children, Palestinian medical officials said, as Israel expanded a military offensive to target homes of wanted militants. The attack, which Israel said targeted a militant, was the single deadliest incident of the five-day-old Israeli operation and hiked a toll Sunday that was already the highest number of civilians killed in one day, according to Gaza medics. The bloodshed is likely to raise international pressure for a cease-fire, with Egypt taking the leading role in mediating between Israel and Hamas.

President Barack Obama said he had been in touch with the leaders of Israel, Egypt, and Turkey in an effort to halt the fighting. "We're going to have to see what kind of progress we can make in the next 24, 36, 48 hours," he said. Obama cautioned against a potential Israeli ground invasion into Gaza, warning it could only deepen its death toll. At the same time, he blamed Palestinian militants for starting the round of fighting by raining rockets onto Israel, and he defended Israel's right to defend itself.
"Israel has every right to expect that it does not have missiles fired into its territory," Obama said in Thailand at the start of a three-nation tour in Asia.

An Israeli envoy arrived in Cairo on Sunday and held talks with Egyptian officials on a ceasefire, according to Egyptian security officials and Nabil Shaath, a top aide of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who was in the Egyptian capital. But Israel and Gaza's militant Hamas rulers remain far apart on any terms for a halt in the bloodshed, which has killed 70 Palestinians including 36 civilians, according to Gaza health officials and three Israeli civilians.

Hamas is linking a truce deal to a complete lifting of the border blockade on Gaza imposed since Islamists seized the territory by force. Hamas also seeks Israeli guarantees to halt targeted killings of its leaders and military commanders. Israeli officials reject such demands. They say they are not interested in a "timeout," and want firm guarantees that militant rocket fire into Israel will finally end. Past ceasefires have been short lived.

As the offensive moved forward, Israel found itself at a crossroads on the cusp of launching a ground offensive into Gaza to strike an even tougher blow against Hamas, or pursuing Egyptian-led truce efforts. "The Israeli military is prepared to significantly expand the operation," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting.

You mean like in 2009 or 2003?, nah; they said this time it has nothing to do with elections.

Like they did the times before. The thing is actually this time it makes little sense to me, with Syria' civil war and Hezbollah suffering setbacks in Lebanon, it would have been a good time to gather some international goodwill for a strike on Iran later on.

Or they decided to cash in early and get rid of some Gazah warleaders, rattle some sabers, wait for election and let stuff go back as before. Actually it makes some sense.

the expats i live around aren't even really arsed to comment about it anymore. the general sentiment is 'yes, this is israel under likud, and it's exactly as frightening as one would think'

then it's back to thinking about more productive things, like the awesome things one can do when they live in a country where they are not being pulled out of reservists to march into a hellhole and give an aggressionist party an aggression to justify their re-election. in today's case: we're off to go have some ethiopian plates and talk about how much we fucking hated Prometheus because it is a worthless piece of shit movie.

Rupert Murdoch has somethings to say:

Quote:
No, Murdoch is Murdoch, which is what makes two tweets of his from last night so interesting. The first: "Can't Obama stop his friends in Egypt shelling Israel?" And the second: "Why Is Jewish owned press so consistently anti-Israel in every crisis?"

The Helots were conquered vassals of the Spartans, and little more than slaves. But nonetheless, every year the ephors, the elected leaders of Sparta, would declare war on the Helots, and send the best of their youngest soldiers to go out and slaughter the strongest and fittest Helots, in order to keep them docile.

Maybe if he had shot up the first Twilight movie, we could have been spared the last couple of years of this crap.

this is really too good.

you know, i am strongly against agism, and i certainly know people who are sharper at 90 than a lot of other people at 30 but:

when you get past 80, a lot of places start doing things like testing you more stringently before renewing your driver's license. maybe we should be requiring similar tests for people who can ruin people's lives in ways other than just driving over them? like, joe arpaio is 80, isn't he? maybe we should give him a little test, just to see if he remembers, say, what the job of a sheriff actually is, and sort suggest that if he thinks it's making public policy rather than arresting people for things like rape, it's maybe time to retire?
