old enough to remember them good ol' days, when the darkies knew not to let the sun set on them in our good, godfearin' towns, and we didn't have no sussin' "civil rights legislamation" to get in the way of puttin people in tent-prisons just cause they don't show no I.D.

and yet, he keeps getting re-elected.

at his age, i'd hope for a debilitating stroke, but his brain seems to have pretty well atrophied, so that wouldn't really change anything.

Is Gideon Levy the most hated man in Israel or just the most heroic?

It's The Independent asking, not me.

A glimpse into the mind of the ruling far right nationalists in Israel. This is an Op-Ed from the Jerusalem Post authoured by Ariel Sharon's son:
"A decisive conclusion is necessary"

Some highlights:
Quote:
THE DESIRE to prevent harm to innocent civilians in Gaza will ultimately lead to harming the truly innocent: the residents of southern Israel. The residents of Gaza are not innocent, they elected Hamas. The Gazans aren’t hostages; they chose this freely, and must live with the consequences.

[...]

Why do our citizens have to live with rocket fire from Gaza while we fight with our hands tied? Why are the citizens of Gaza immune? If the Syrians were to open fire on our towns, would we not attack Damascus?

[...]

We need to flatten entire neighborhoods in Gaza. Flatten all of Gaza. The Americans didn’t stop with Hiroshima – the Japanese weren’t surrendering fast enough, so they hit Nagasaki, too.

There should be no electricity in Gaza, no gasoline or moving vehicles, nothing. Then they’d really call for a ceasefire.

Were this to happen, the images from Gaza might be unpleasant – but victory would be swift, and the lives of our soldiers and civilians spared.

But of course while there is massive support for the current bombings most israelis would rather not see the loss of IDF soldiers a land invasion would mean. An interesting moral that.

of course, then we helped the Japanese rebuild it all after they surrendered...

Not to mention that they're two completely different scenarios . . .

they are different, but there's an important lesson in there that Sharon probably doesn't have it in him to draw: the US and Japan stopped being enemies not because the US nuked two Japanese cities off the face of the earth, but because the US went to great lengths to help them rebuild their country after the war. granted, it was done on US terms and it was motivated by anti-communism and economic opportunism, but the end result has still been a Japan that has been wealthy and prosperous, and a US-Japanese relationship that has been pretty benign and cooperative.

whether that can be done with Israel and Gaza, i don't know. i rather doubt it. but the lesson to take from the end of the Pacific War is not that overwhelming force will make someone stop being your enemy; it's that how you treat them after you defeat them will strongly influence whether they'll stay your enemy.
