Just going to reiterate what one commenter said about one of the twitter posts though:
Twitter Post wrote: | because there's not enough investment in AAA games about something other than war, cowboys, football, cars. sorry, but it's true |
With the budget of AAA games, the developers are a lot less likely to take chances. They know the Call of Duty: MXII Gray Ops Super Ultra NoScopes edition will sell and has a pretty much guaranteed fanbase from previous games. Ditto for the Battlefield franchise, Need for Speed, Forza, Gran Turismo, Halo, Bioshock, Madden, etc. This is why games from independent studios tend to be more outside-the-box as far as mechanics and content goes.
I don't like most AAA games (Bioshock and Gran Turismo are exceptions), because they tend to be dumbed down sequels that are exactly the same as their predecessors. But that's not sexism. That's hedging your bets that the money you put into development will pay off by making games that you know will sell, thrill-a-minute shooters and sports games with an already dedicated fanbase due to years of releases.
Also, what's to say that women don't play games that involve sports, war, cowboys and cars? I know women who play sports and shooting games religiously. _________________ The Thirties dreamed white marble and slipstream chrome, immortal crystal and burnished bronze, but the rockets on the covers of the Gernsback pulps had fallen on London in the dead of night, screaming. - William Gibson, The Gernsback Continuum |

It's not sexism, it's economics => sexism
If we pretend women don't play those AAA games (they do), and if someone claims nobody wants to invest in AAA games that do appeal to women gamers, then that's sexism. It's sexism on part of the investors, regardless if they cover it up with return-on-investment bullshit. It's sexism because it doesn't even make any sense, because women do game and games aimed at them (too) are a huge gap in the market - a perfect investment opportunity.
It's also complete and utter bullshit because there are plenty of AAA games that aren't about war, cowboys, football and cars. _________________ attitude of a street punk, only cutting selected words out of context to get onself excuse to let one's dirty mouth loose |

I'm not sure how I feel about this article yet, other than that I feel it is extraordinarily relevant to the atmosphere in the comics sub-forum as of late.
It's about how emotional men can get. _________________ Samsally the GrayAce |

Isn't "impulse shopping" also a result of using emotions over rational thought? I'm pretty sure that'd be one more in the "men showing" emotions column. _________________ ...if a single leaf holds the eye, it will be as if the remaining leaves were not there.

Yeah, but if you were a guy, you'd statistically more likely to be engaging in even more impulse buying, so it's no biggie. _________________ ...if a single leaf holds the eye, it will be as if the remaining leaves were not there.

I got worried at Mansplaining (social justice warrior bingo power word) but my fears were unfounded and the article is sound in explaining a general concept. |

Here are some things I read in my paper today, which I thought were relevant to The Other Thread:
Every week, 56 rapes and 5 group-rapes occur in Belgium. Worldwide (I think), only 4% of the perpetrators are tried and convicted, according to the UN. According to the justice department, this is one in three in Belgium. Even though local hospitals are filling up with boxes of swabs from rape tests, two thirds of these are never analysed. This is due to the budget cuts the justice department is pushing through, which make analysing every sample impossible. Even though Belgium has a DNA-database, these samples are rarely if ever entered into it. This is partially due to the fact that only people who are convicted of five years or more jailtime get entered into the database - and you can see the problem right there. Not only are the samples taken from rape victims ignored, but seeing as most perpetrators get off with a couple of years suspended jailtime, that database is staying empty.
