Saw this today and thought it should go here. |
On the other end of the spectrum:
http://kotaku.com/5964700/you-can-thank-women-for-dragon-age-3s-lack-of-creepy-sex-plot
| Quote: | Hearing that women make a difference in game development is one thing, seeing what it means in practice is another. Recently, David Gaider—lead writer on the Dragon Age franchise—posted a blog about how having women on his writing team affected something in Dragon Age 3.
The team was having a peer review about the game, and it seemed as if everything about a certain plot point was fine. Then, someone spoke up. A woman. The plot point, she argued, could easily be seen as a form of rape. Everyone became stunned—not because she was off-base, but because she was right. She was right, even though the writer didn't intend the scene to come off way, even though the team considers itself to be progressive.
| Quote: | | In this case, it was not a long trip for the person playing through the plot to see what was happening at a slightly different angle, and it was no longer good-creepy. It was bad-creepy. It was discomforting and not cool at all. And this female writer was not alone. All the other women at the table nodded their heads, and had noted the same thing in their critiques. |
What's curious about the team of writers on Dragon Age 3 is that it is primarily composed of women. Which leads Gaider to ask: what would have happened if that wasn't the case? Had the team been mostly guys—which isn't uncommon—would the scene have gone in? Gaider thinks so.
| Quote: | And this thought occurred as well: if this had been a team with no female perspective present, it would have gone into the game that way. Had that female writer been the lone woman, would her view have been disregarded as an over-reaction? A lone outlier? How often does that happen on game development teams, ones made up of otherwise intelligent and liberal guys who are then shocked to find out that they inadvertently offended a group that is quickly approaching half of the gaming audience?
|
Still, crisis averted, as Gaider says. Still, this example seems important in light of recent controversy surrounding the devastating things women in game development have to suffer just to be a part of this hobby we all love so much. They have to go through these things, even though they can often make our games better.
It makes me wonder, too—how many creepy sex things in games have occurred because there wasn't a woman on the team that dared to speak up? Maybe you don't know what I'm talking about, but there are quite a few creepy sex scenes or things with awful sexual undertones that sneak their way into games. Things that I doubt were intended to be uncomfortable, or if they are purposefully that way, the intention is not worthwhile/good enough to warrant potentially triggering someone. |

I have no idea what either game even is, but Darq quoted something about Dragon Age 3, so I'm going to guess da2 = Dragon Age 2 _________________ butts |

Who knows about Dragon's Age 2 writing staff, but I'd have to guess there was definitely a lack of female input in the art staff. _________________

One Girl’s Quest to Make the Easy-Bake Oven More Boy-Friendly
By Bonnie RochmanDec. 03, 2012
| Quote: | Pink and purple are not 4-year-old Gavyn Boscio’s favorite colors. But cooking is, and he really, really wants an Easy-Bake Oven for Christmas.
Easy-Bake Ovens, however, come in nothing but pink and light purple, as his parents and his 13-year-old sister, McKenna Pope, found out when they went shopping for one last week near their home in Garfield, N.J. Not only did they not find any Easy-Bake Ovens in any primary colors, but the products were displayed in boxes with smiling girls on the packaging. No boys. Not even one.
McKenna, who is in eighth grade, was outraged. Her mother, Erica Boscio, recalls her saying the packaging of the mini-ovens was “detrimental to society.”
“She really talks like that,” says Boscio.
You might think that in the enlightened, gender-neutral era in which we live — where boys are encouraged to cry and girls hurtle into space — that boys would be included in advertising for a toy oven. Males, after all, still outnumber women as professional chefs in restaurant kitchens. “This perpetuates that whole situation where girls cook and boys don’t,” says McKenna, who thoroughly researched the oven’s apparent antipathy to boys by watching every ad she could find online (all girls as far as she could tell) and perusing Hasbro’s Easy-Bake FAQs, which describe the product as a “fashionable fun food brand that inspires tween girls to bake, share and show their creativity.”
Tween girls? “That put her over the top,” says Boscio. “She said, Mom, I have to do something about this. I’m going to film a video.”

Cop walks away from rape charges, but is super sad he won't ever get to work as a cop again. And I'm sure we can all agree that's punishment enough. Or to quote the judge: "Yet, Scully still called Emanuele “fortunate,” because of the large amount of support he had from his friends, family and wife even after, Scully said, he broke their hearts with his selfish actions.
It was because of this support system that Scully did not impose additional fines on Emanuele, because he said doing so would further punish those loyal people Emanuele had already hurt." _________________ "Moderation in temper, is always a virtue; but moderation in principle, is a species of vice. Criminal coercion?
He obliged her to act in away she didn't want to and that could fit in the definition, but what he wanted her to do was to have sex.
That is rape.
I may be wrong but criminal coercion sounds to me like a general law, to apply only in those cases where there are no other, more detailed laws partaining the acts committed.
As for how the rapist became the poor victim... I have no words. _________________ So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure;

I'm not sure what you think I was saying? He commited a horrible crime and walked away from it merely out a job. That is justice fail to me. _________________ Samsally the GrayAce |
