Coming from a tea-bagger, this makes me nervous:
GOP Sen. Jim DeMint: Boehner’s ‘fiscal cliff’ proposal ‘will destroy American jobs’
By Chris Moody, Yahoo! News | The Ticket – 2 hrs 6 mins ago
| Quote: | WASHINGTON—South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint just gave Democrats a shiny new talking point.
The tea party-backed senator on Tuesday slammed House Republican leaders for the fiscal cliff proposal they offered earlier this week.
"Speaker [John] Boehner's $800 billion tax hike will destroy American jobs and allow politicians in Washington to spend even more, while not reducing our $16 trillion debt by a single penny," DeMint said in a statement. "This isn't rocket science. Everyone knows that when you take money out of the economy, it destroys jobs, and everyone knows that when you give politicians more money, they spend it. This is why Republicans must oppose tax increases and insist on real spending reductions that shrink the size of government and allow Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money."
Republican House leaders on Monday sent a letter to the White House with a plan to avoid a series of automatic tax increases and spending cuts set to begin on Jan. 1, 2013. With a 10-year price tag of about $2.2 trillion, the Republican proposal would raise federal revenue by closing loopholes and capping deductions within the tax code and making changes to entitlement programs. The letter was signed by seven House leaders, including Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp of Michigan.
Democrats dismissed it quickly, calling for a bill that would increase taxes on households earning more than $250,000 per year and more federal spending on infrastructure, which were not included in the Republican plan.
DeMint's comment may be a bit of a sideshow—he's not directly involved in the negotiations and he represents just a single vote in Congress—but it's representative of how conservatives feel about the Republican proposal, and it offers ample ammunition to President Barack Obama and Democrats in the fiscal cliff media relations war. |

| Take money out of the economy? Where do they think tax dollars go? Rich old white people's Swiss Bank Accounts? Surely it must be trickling down. |

That's a good common sense idea Dogen! I say we take the popular, well-established principle of the trickle down economy and then we marry it* with that other pillar of common-sense cost-cutting: We cut out the middle man!
*Given given its nourishing, caring implications the trickle down theory can safely be classified as female and thus completely eligible to marry the aggressive, business-like and manly concept of cutting out the middle man. |

I think we spend a little too much time making sure everyone's selfish desires are protected. I worry less about making sure everyone can spend money on themselves than whether, I don't know, disabled people have healthcare or something misguided like that. But I'm a dirty socialist.
Well, I'm not dirty...
... Well, not physically.
Right now. _________________ "Worse comes to worst, my people come first, but my tribe lives on every country on earth. I’ll do anything to protect them from hurt, the human race is what I serve." - Baba Brinkman |

i love the raving about how all this is 'job-killing'. what the good senator does not mention is that obama's proposal includes some stimulus money: i.e., money spent to give people jobs.
three guesses what the republicans think about it.
i really don't get the hysteria over increasing taxes on the wealthy. you'd think the plan was to take every cent they had, rather than going back to the tax levels in the clinton years. there was some stuff on npr this morning, about companies paying stock dividends early, and investors even selling off all of their stock, in fear of the horrible tax burden they will face next year. clinton was right - these people really do not understand basic math.
honestly, anyone that stupid deserves to be poor. maybe then they will get the value of the social net. _________________ aka: neverscared!

We could pay half of America's unemployed to dig holes, and then pay the rest of the unemployed to fill those holes in.
Instant 0% unemployment! |
