oh, it's short - i'll quote it in full for the proper effect (my bold).
Quote:
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Oh.) had some harsh words Sunday for Barack Obama's proposal to avert the looming fiscal cliff.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Boehner said, "The president's idea of a negotiation is roll over and do what I ask."

CHRIS WALLACE, HOST: So, you've been around this time a long time, you've been in a lot of negotiations. What is their game? What is their thinking as to how they're going to work -- well, they just figure they won, they're going to get what they want?

JOHN BOEHNER, REPUBLICAN SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE: I have no idea, Chris. If I knew, I would share it with you. I don't know what they are thinking.

WALLACE: Do you think they are being bullies?

BOEHNER: I think -- they've won the election. They must have forgotten Republicans continue to hold a majority in the House. But, you know, the president's idea of a negotiation is roll over and do what I ask. We need to find common ground and we need to find it quickly.

WALLACE: And, again, you kind of didn't answer it the first time, what are the chances we're going to go over the cliff?

BOEHNER: There is clearly a chance. But I'm going to tell you, I might be an easy guy to get along with -- affable, obviously, I've worked in a bipartisan way on a number of agreements.

But I'm going to tell you one thing, Chris -- I'm determined to solve our debt problem. We have a serious spending problem and it's going to be dealt with.

WALLACE: And if the White House is unwilling to do it, are you prepared to say --

BOEHNER: We are going to deal with America's debt problem.

WALLACE: And if they refuse to do it in the way that you find acceptable?

BOEHNER: We're going to deal with it.

WALLACE: Sooner or later?

BOEHNER: Sooner or later. We're going to deal with this debt problem and we're going to do it now. We're not going to kick this can down the road again.

it must be so shocking to the republicans - first obama takes over their health insurance ideas, now he's using their negotiating tactics. but have no fear! the debt problem is going to be solved. he says so like 6 times. no actual details or anything approaching 'common ground' (conservipedia must define 'common ground' as 'the republican platform'). but he keeps saying they are going to deal with it, so that debt can count itself dealt with!

In less depressing news, Square-Enix had to pull a marketing campaign for Hitman 5 because it resulted in people being sent death threats over Facebook.
Videogame companies are really bad at this sometimes. Combined with the rampant sexism you kinda have to wonder what's wrong with the industry.

Good article, too bad it starts off irrelevant and shitty. The virtual boy has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the story, and while it was a flop of a product, it was introduced with high expectations and was cutting edge for its time, and was not "some exceptionally stupid idea". Nintendo's decision to push out an incomplete product was an exceptionally stupid idea, which basically destroyed poor Gunpei Yokoi's career, a man who gave us Donkey Kong, Metroid, Kid Icarus, the Game Boy, and Shigeru Miyamoto.

Yes, it is truly a tragic tale of human misery and woe and nobody is ever allowed to make fun of it ever.

Well her tone starts out:
Quote:
When an industry is made-up of almost equal parts society-changing brilliance and playboy man-child syndrome, it's bound to generate some exceptionally stupid ideas.

That wasn't the case at all with the virtual boy though. It was corporate greed/pride/lust/whatever, not the result of some "playboy man-child syndrome".

Judge temporarily blocks Calif. gay therapy law
By By LISA LEFF | Associated Press – 12 hrs ago
Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked California from enforcing a first-of-its-kind law that bars licensed psychotherapists from working to change the sexual orientations of gay minors, but he limited the scope of his order to just the three providers who have appealed to him to overturn the measure.

U.S. District Court Judge William Shubb made a decision just hours after a hearing on the issue, ruling that the First Amendment rights of psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals who engage in "reparative" or "conversion" therapy outweigh concern that the practice poses a danger to young people.

"Even if SB 1172 is characterized as primarily aimed at regulating conduct, it also extends to forms of (conversion therapy) that utilize speech and, at a minimum, regulates conduct that has an incidental effect on speech," Shubb wrote. The judge also disputed the California Legislature's finding that trying to change young people's sexual orientation puts them at risk for suicide or depression, saying it was based on "questionable and scientifically incomplete studies."

The law, which was passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in October, states that therapists and counselors who use "sexual orientation change efforts" on clients under 18 would be engaging in unprofessional conduct and subject to discipline by state licensing boards. It is set to take effect on Jan. 1.

Although the ruling is a setback for the law's supporters, the judge softened the impact of his decision by saying that it applies only to three people — psychiatrist Anthony Duk, marriage and family therapist Donald Welch, and Aaron Bitzer, a former patient who is studying to become a counselor who specializes in clients who are unhappy being gay.

The exemption for them will remain in place only until Shubb can hold a trial on the merits of their case, although in granting their request for an injunction, the judge noted he thinks they would prevail in getting the law struck down on constitutional grounds.

I wonder what the limits are on psychotherapy. If therapy is protected free speech why can you sue your therapist for harm? Because professional standards form the basis of what is appropriate therapy. Since homosexuality isn't a disorder, I'm curious how this is protected in terms of practice (that is, the application of conversion therapy versus holding the theory personally). It occurs to me that I don't know the APA's (either one of them) position on conversion therapy as an appropriate treatment. Something doesn't have to be a disorder to be treated, after all (fear of spiders isn't a disorder, but you can get treated for it, appropriately). Hmm.

Well, that was easy to find. The -ology APA doesn't approve of conversion therapy, it's said more than once. Nothing on the -iatrist APA, though, yet.

The Supreme Court unanimously decided that flooding someone else's land, even if only temporarily, still constitutes a taking, however temporary, under the Fifth Amendment.

In case you didn't know, John MCafee, creator of the anti-virus software, is insane.

Now, he's been caught.

And the stress of it all may be killing him.

URL speaks for itself... this is the second, recent case of the police claiming a young man, handcuffed and in the back of a police car (after being searched for weapons) managed to shoot himself in the head with a previously unnoticed firearm.

Yeah.

AS funny as this is in someways, anyone who has done this knows this can be a scary place, even if you're a regular smoker. It's like the difference between drinking coors light (smoking) and and doing shots of 151 rum (ingesting cannabis).
