Yeah, we had some ratan and made it into a halberd and then a MASSIVE katana which is totally called something else but I'm drunk and can't think of it. We totally added some melted down figures in pewter to the base to balance the whole thing. I could even use it well even though it was almost taller than me.

Anyway, it was good times but I was never big enough to wield anything effectively. Also, women in armor was a bit uncommon.

it's like fiona says, your priorities should be what fulfills you as a person and give your life a sense of purpose. if at this particular time that happens to be your career then you shouldn't be made to feel like you need to make excuses or apologize to anyone for doing what you find satisfying. there may come a time when your priorities shift to focus more on your friends and family or to a significant other and starting a family of your own. if at some point these aspects of your life give you the same satisfaction and sense of fulfillment as your career does now, then making them your priority is just as valid (though no more nor less so) then you find your career to be now. pursue what makes you happy (and/ or more importantly) what gives you a sense of purpose, because in the end it's from there that you will derive your happiness.

Also thanks for the wise words, Finn (can I call you Finn?)

Some people are just sooo closed minded towards anything that is different than what they are doing. I love my job and I love my little side job of teaching yoga. Both jobs inspire me to be a better person.

I just gotta add: you live with you until the day you die. Regardless of what happens, you can not separate you from yourself, so your decisions are ultimately yours to live with. I've always thought you seemed like one of the most upbeat, happy, and overall positive people on these forums.

And like you've said, people project themselves a lot when they judge others and their actions; people can't see themselves being happy doing what you're doing so they think you must be unhappy. To me, they are the ones who are leading the truly sad lives.

And it's not like you have to have the same priorities forever. You can change them whenever you feel like it, as things worth prioritizing come and go. You went through some stuff, so you're focusing on you and what helps you feel good right now. That seems like a good plan to me.

Yeaaaah, I'm fortunate that our local group doesn't have folks like that, and are also the type that like to, um. ... Irritate the "IT MAST BE HEXACTLY HISTORICAL!"

... One of them has a native american persona (She does also have some native american ancestry). And she carries a set of documents/citations proving that, yes, there were some native americans that had been brought to the 'old world' in the time frame the SCA considers 'period'.

Her husband, for a time, had the persona of a chinese mercenary who had come west.

It was fun to watch them destroy folks who were being super picky. =)

Thank you! I always try to be the best version of myself, though sometimes I slip up or allow outside variables effect me.

You know, it is crazy how people I haven't met yet understand this, and some people close to me judge me for doing what makes me happy.

To me the sadder outlook is that nothing is worth anything unless you're paired up with someone else. As though we're all symbiotes that will wither and die without our opposite number.

You would probably appreciate this, then.

What is the term for someone who only uses technical terminology when basic, more common words would be OK?

Example: Using "Monozygotic twins" instead of "identical twins".

Voluntarily? Either "grad school student," or "pretentious douche," or "showoff". "Pretentious" works just fine. Some folks use "nerd". Due to a sense of cosmic irony, there's actually an adjective that is just as much a mouthful as the words they are probably using that describes their behavior: "sesquipedalian," which means long words, long-winded, or polysyllabic. Razz
Involuntarily? Asperger's, probably. Laughing

I know someone who is in school for psychology, and as such is taking a bunch of science courses.

Their vocabulary is like this now. I haven't called them out on it directly because it's probably something they are doing to help remember the terms. But yes, it comes off extremely annoying at times.

They also try to over analyze everything now.

After I took one class in psychology in college I backed away from that degree super fast. (it had never really been on the table, but it was still a bit like "Ah... NOPE.")

That shit was interesting as hell, but being in that class did nothing good for my own state of mind.
