Though I'm wondering retrospectively if this was a joke? Given the nature and lack of picture credits in this very thread? _________________ Live to laugh. |

Well it's the "branding it as their own" thing. There is nothing wrong with aggregating content found elsewhere, but watermarking it and then not crediting the original source is kinda a dickmove. _________________

Ahsooo... Ganking other people's work for their content, branding the hell out of it to draw more viewers to the site, and then selling ad space. Honestly, I'd never thought of it like that, but it is upsetting.
I suppose the difference between that and what we do here is that, while Tat does get ad money for us coming to his site to see other people's funny or quirky pictures, that isn't the sole purpose of the forum. And it doesn't underhandedly claim other people's work to advertise itself. _________________ Live to laugh. |

Plus I think most of us link the images directly. You can check the source of a picture with a right-click.
But honestly, on this scale it doesn't even matter. _________________

like here, this is just stealing content from the The Oatmeal guy. There is no link to the original source or anything like that. _________________

On the one hand... intellectual property... but on the other hand, fuck the Oatmeal guy. _________________ "Worse comes to worst, my people come first, but my tribe lives on every country on earth. I’ll do anything to protect them from hurt, the human race is what I serve." - Baba Brinkman |

I've long disliked The Oatmeal, though nowhere near as much as I dislike 9gag et al
^ why The Oatmeal sucks, after the style of The Oatmeal
by this I mean that I dislike the nature of the content, not the actual person behind it
The Oatmeal is really just an example of some random SEO guy who managed to monetize the sort of content that Reddit might like.
I like aggregates after the style of Reddit infinitely better than sites like 9gag btw, because they actually present themselves as an aggregate (on most of the boards where they are used as such) with a place to discuss the the things they aggregate, rather than just ripping off content.
Admittedly, the only Reddit board I have actually visited more than once is r/Haskell, so I might not know what I'm talking about here. _________________ butts |

I clicked on r/Haskell hoping to find a board dedicated to the Vice President Charlie Haskell character from Jack McDevitt's sci-fi/disaster novel Moonfall.
I am disappoint. _________________ The older I get, the more certain I become of one thing. True and abiding cynicism is simply a form of cowardice. |

Instead you got a programming language named after one combinatory logician called Haskell Curry, huh?

I hear that people who hang out in r/Haskell are smart, curious, and have gone off and learned it on their own, and that's the kind of ambitious, dominant and self-reliant individual I want to see!

i understand that orchids tend to look like the critters that pollinate them, so the orchid shape acts as an attractant.
......which means there really are flying monkeys. purple flying monkeys. _________________ aka: neverscared!
