Phantom of the Opera? I remember liking it, but I read it when I was so young I didn't retain much of it.

I recommend you "Twilight". I can't read past page 10 without scream and tossing the book terrorized xD

Now, I really love the early Stephen King and I recommend his books, specially It, the Shinning and Salems lot.

H.P. Lovecraft is, indeed, excellent. But yeah before that you may want to go with the classics. Frankenstein is an awesome book. Read it in one afternoon in my local library. Couldn't let it go.
