True, however I would like to also point out that Richard Jewel did not *throw bombs* at police during the investigation/arrest.

We're okay but I literally can't even leave my house.

A door to door search is happening now, and residents are warned not to open doors and not to pick up hitchhikers. The MBTA is shut down by order of the governor. All vehicular traffic into and out of Watertown has been halted. MIT is closed, Northwestern U is closed. I'm here with a bunch of people whose workplaces are closed.

That sounds unbelievably shitty.

Good luck and stay safe, eh.

That's pretty damning if it's true, yeah. I had not seen that tidbit when I initially posted (however, given some of the *massive* inaccuracies from the various news agencies so far? Grain of salt). My point was more "don't jump to conclusions just yet." See for instance, there were reports that a Sunil Tripathi was the second suspect, which have since been walked back and a different guy has been identified.

On a different note, why are Chechens attacking Boston? I thought they traditionally went after Russia?

In the slightly grim satisfactory portion of this, apparently* the dead suspect is dead at least partially on account of having been run over by his own brother in a rush to escape

* who knows, story might change

Chechnya has been having issues since the 90's with the spread of radical Islam. Especially bitter after fighting 2 wars with Russia over independence.

I get to hear an explosion soon

Quote:
UPDATE for Residents near Norfolk St. Somerville Police will shortly conduct a contained, controlled explosion of a suspicious object in the Norfolk Street area. The explosion will be contained and does not pose a threat. This is a safety precaution.

I know it's immature, but a little part of me really hopes that vaguely described "suspicious object" is another light-up mooninite.

Just some things I couldn't help but think about. After all the "sand nigger" rhetoric flying around on the internet: Chechnya is literally Caucasian (geographically, ethnically, and linguistically), and the region is part of Europe.

Chechnya's official government has a bad record of human rights abuses and torture with nobody held accountable for these crimes, which I hope will not be repeated if we manage to apprehend this suspect. A new independent review (without any access to classified records) found that the Bush administration definitely engaged in actual torture post 9/11, and the Obama administration hasn't been holding anybody accountable.

*edit* The suspects' family says the two were born in Kyrgyzstan (which is where a lot of ethnic Chechens were deported under the Soviet regime) and Russia. There might not be any political or militant connection to the turmoil in Chechnya.

[also apparently I can't type]

sam - whereabouts in boston are you?

and wheels - npr was reporting that, i think their aunt said they had lived maybe a week in chechnya. so i was wondering how much connection they would really feel to the chechen troubles - but who knows what stories they heard growing up. there are people of irish descent in the u.s. still mad at britain for the potato famine.

and i have a nasty feeling that all the people throwing around "sand nigger" will be less interested in geography and more in that single word 'muslim'.

now we just have to wait and see how many of them are in congress.

i really hope they can capture the younger brother alive, because i really want to know what they were thinking.

Old scars in family history can persist for a long, long time.

I grew up hearing stories about how my great-grandmother's family had to flee from the Bolsheviks and ended up coming to the US. I still dislike Bolsheviks and Stalinists, although that isn't the only reason by far.
