yeah - you grow up hearing stories, and your dad and uncle arguing decades-old politics over dinner...and that becomes part of your worldview.
still not clear why they would have thought a bombing in the u.s. would have any impact on anything happening in russia...but people do end up with convoluted thought processes. _________________ aka: neverscared!

Chechnya has been having issues since the 90's with the spread of radical Islam. Especially bitter after fighting 2 wars with Russia over independence. |
I'm still guessing it's an Jihad thing, not a "free Chechnya" thing. _________________ The Thirties dreamed white marble and slipstream chrome, immortal crystal and burnished bronze, but the rockets on the covers of the Gernsback pulps had fallen on London in the dead of night, screaming. - William Gibson, The Gernsback Continuum |

they may have thought that the spectacle of Chechens bombing a major US sporting event in a major city and then completely paralyzing that same city would draw attention to Chechnya's turmoil, because chances are most people in this country have never even heard of Chechnya
of course it also produced the spectacle of Ramzan Kadyrov calling for "restraint" by police |

So apparently the two brothers were rather well liked by the people around them:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/19/dzhokhar-tzarnaev-tamerlan-tzarnaev-identified_n_3115102.html
Quote: | "I knew him as nothing but sociable, compassionate, friendly, athletic, just a wonderful kid," Aaronson said on Friday. "You would never know by talking to him that he was not born here, he just completely blended in and I had no reason to suspect anything untoward at all. And I liked him a lot, you know?" |
Quote: | Woskie's younger sister graduated with Dzhokhar in 2011, Woskie said. "The younger brother acted as a lifeguard, was a scholar athlete, would be a designated driver to his friends," Woskie said. "He was a compassionate human being." |
Quote: | "I feel really weird saying this now, but he was a pretty cool guy, and I genuinely enjoyed spending time with him in that class," EpsteinKraus told HuffPost. During gym, the two would joke about sports and movies, and shadow box together. "I actually called him Rocky, because he looked a bit like a Russian Rocky, and we would joke around about that." |
In a way, I think this only adds to the tragedy. It seems to make answering "Why did they do this?" that much more difficult. _________________ ...if a single leaf holds the eye, it will be as if the remaining leaves were not there.

well, that's just it - there seems to have been absolutely nothing to suggest they would do something so extreme. but given all the shooting and explosives during the chase, clearly they did.

hard to know what, if anything, that means - to him or to the rest of us.

the boston police department is waxing poetic:
Quote: | CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody. |
can't blame them, this has been a tremendously stressful week for them - well, for all of boston. _________________ aka: neverscared!

Crowds are lining the street and cheering every first-responder vehicle that's passing by.
The suspect is actually being taken to a hospital where one of the wounded officers is. |
