I guess I'll make this a mixed bag since even though I'm frustrated and annoyed there are some good things too.

warning: this is just a rant to vent some frustration and it's doubtful you care about anything written here so you might just want to skip over it.

prologue: I've had frequent migraines since early childhood but for the past 7 years or so the pain has been there constantly. I've completely exhausted my options for prophylactic and abortive medications with little to no improvement. I've changed my diet, tried alternative treatments, and all sorts of things to no avail. For the past few weeks I've been undergoing a series of surgical procedures to try peripheral nerve stimulation to see if that helps at all.

- first procedure was around the last week of april.
- I have had two wires sticking out of the back of my head since then.
+ only for a week though, to see if it works before putting a permanent implant inside me.
- I had to go all week without taking a shower, what with the live wires sticking out of my head and all.
- went to get the permanent implant and while in the pre-op holding area the doctor stopped by to tell me that he would rather add a few more wires in there for good measure.
- I now have two wires coming out of the side of my head in addition to the two in the back.
- which means yet another operation.
+ I do sort of secretly like having surgical procedures. not anything about the procedure itself, mind you, but the anesthesia. I play this little game where I try to see how long I can fight its effects and stay awake. I've even developed this game I play in my head involving observations of what's going on around me, playing music in my head and mentally reciting the lyrics, trying to think up new ideas for shit and planning how to go about doing it (no matter how dumb of an idea it may be), etc. while giving everything a numerical value. that when I finally do come out of it I can use the images and events I remember in conjunction with the numbers to see how much I'm actually able to remember and usually what my last thought was before they put me under.
- the soonest he could schedule me to have another go at getting the permanent implant is over a week from now.
- that means still no showers for for another 10 days or so.
+ it actually seems to be working. I'm not pain free but I'm much more functional without having to rely on opioids.
- oh, sorry, did I forget to mention that this place is in new york? so with driving time included (though we've arranged it so that we miss most of rush hour) the three trips I've made up there so far, from the time I leave the driveway to the time I pull into the driveway, have never been less than an 18 hour day.

traditionally for migraines they do occipital nerve stimulation so the two wires in the back of my head are connected to what they call "leads" which is basically a long strand of tiny electrodes. the other two leads go over my temples since that is primarily where my pain is. I think I heard the doctor say they're stimulating the supraorbital nerve, but I was still pretty groggy so I can't say for sure.

FUCK YEAH SCIENCE.

Seriously, though, I'm glad it seems to be helping.

And think of it this way: You get to be one of the early cyborgs! =)

yeah, I just can't wait until I can finally take a real shower and not have to bath in the sink like some hobo. Not to mention being able to go out without everyone seeing these four wires sticking out of my head, which are connected to two pacemakers strapped to my back from which even more, much thicker, cat5-looking, cables are coming from and are attached to an original gameboy sized control unit on each hip.

but, yeah, I'm psyched it's seems to be resulting in some improvement, I'm just frustrated right now because all this external stuff is a huge pain in the ass and I was supposed to be done having to deal with it by now. mostly I think I'm just grumpy because I really want a shower.

not that many among the homeless population are likely have a computer or phone with internet access, but just in case, I wasn't trying to offend anyone.
I have a special sort of empathy for people in that situation.

+Really freaking excited for Star Trek
- Saw enough of a spoiler to know part of the movie already pisses me off.
+Hoping it won't be so bad it ruins the movie.
++++Convinced my friend to go dressed as a Gorn.
+- Going blonde to properly cosplay Kirk (holy shit what have I done)
++++++++++ Pre-movie battles are probably going to be more fun than the movie anyway so fuck that spoiler and my hair has been boring me lately anyway.

+ going to view a house share tomorrow, 3rd floor all to myself
+ it's literally half what I'm paying on this particular shift hole, and it's in a large town rather than a (wealthy) backwater
+ one of my bff's has the 1st floor
- still no job
- still no job
- I wrote 'shift-hole' instead of 'shit-hole'
- still no job
+ friend just bought a van and offered to move me for free
- family asking how work is going
- pretty much every thing
- town I'm potentially moving too has a minor but vibrant comedy/pop/nerd subculture

+ finally went to the dr. about the never-ending cold, she thinks it's a sinus infection
++ which means antibiotics should knock it out
+++ plus prescription-strength cough syrup! with codeine! i might actually be able to get a good night's sleep!
-- can't drink alcohol with all this
--- or eat any dairy with the antibiotic. not sure how i am going to survive without alcohol and cheese....

+ i guess i can try my new microwave egg-cooker-poacher thingie for breakfast. except the eggs have frozen. do you have to thaw eggs before you microwave them?
