I bought a colour laser printer about... 4 years ago? 5? I'm still on the trial colour cartridges that came with it (they are starting to run a bit low...), and the trial black one lasted for almost 3 years. And this was with a decent amount of printing (several hundred pages overall; only several dozens worth of colour.) And the printer was about $140 or so?

For the extra initial money it's amazing how much I've saved on ink; especially since toner doesn't do that "drying out" thing inkjets do, where they have to waste ink to clear the nozzles if you haven't printed for awhile.

If you absolutely need the multifunction though I have less advice; I personally almost never wish I had a copier/scanner/fax at home. And from what you described it doesn't sound like you even especially need scanning/copying/faxing. Have you considered just getting a nice printer?

My printer has been great on ink, but I also buy cartridges on Amazon for about 1/4 of what they want for OEM cartridges.

3D Printer + Living in Dorm = Better Quality of Life.

Shotglasses, bottle opener, a ripped off pair of D&G sunglass frames (physical piracy?), a safety razor, forks, measuring cups...

The new "natural" (white) ABS I got is kind of screwy and doesn't like to feed reliably, but the yellow ABS I got feeds perfectly. Set something to print, leave for class, come back in an hour and bam finished object. I've really got the settings down now for prints that are smooth, accurate and relatively speedy.

Not to mention everyone digs it and thinks it's amazing.

i actually do a fair amount of copying. not so much scanning, because the current all-in-one doesn't have a flatbed scanner, you have to feed things in, and that kinda limits what you can scan (and what you can copy, for that matter).

faxing, though, you are right - who even faxes anymore?

You'd be surprised how many companies still fax. We still get quite some faxes our way. Mostly about bills.

Accidentally slept in, which is actually all this is about. Incidentally, I managed to get to work on time, too.

My four year old daughter just learned most of the worlds to "I wont say it" from Hercules. I am listening to her singing it from her bed right now.

There's a weird belief that you can't edit a fax. It's not true, since you can do it before you fax it.

People believe it is more secure.

As far as I know, the major thing is that faxed signatures legally qualify the same as photocopied signatures (but digital signatures, I believe, do not). and as such are acceptable in court. As such, faxing is still the best way to get signed paperwork to faraway places without having to wait for the post.
