Have you been watching Servant x Service? best slice of life in a LOOOONG time. Actually, I'd have to say it' sone of my fav's this year, up there with Sunday Without God and Silver Spoon.

Also, I'm gonna throw Blood Lad in there too, if you haven't seen it, it's like Soul Eater and Blue Exorcist had a baby, though it's not really like either of them.

Also, I'd call Gatchaman: Crowds the dark horse of this season if for no other reason it's about 1000x better than the original, in pretty much every way, but I may be nostalgic like that.

On an unrelated note, I love watching a series that starts out with ok or crappy animation and BAM they get a budget increase.

I feel like comics and cartoons, both western and eastern, have finally picked up again in terms of quality.

Like I swear the related industries were drying up there for a while, and then the economy went south, and then people figured out how to kind of do digital distribution right.

i guess i feel like it was 6 years ish? of course there was the odd good title, but we seem to be swimming in quality recently

It's probably been closer to about 14 years or so. I'd say there's been waves of anime, where you get a lot of good stuff in a short period, but Cowboy Bebop played a big part in up the ante for anime standards. A couple years later, Spirited Away shattered Japanese box office record (of the time). A TON of other great stuff came out right before and after.

Oh and Pokemon started doing movies in 98. Say what you will, it's better (art and animation wise) than most other kiddie anime.

Basically the generation of people making anime now grew up watching a higher standard.

I'm not much of a fan of most of the older stuff. I think when people speak of any sort of "good ol' days" their opinion is heavily skewed by some rather thick nostalgia glasses for their old favorites, and also a tendency to filter out the classics and ignore the old crud.

From the '90s Kids to the middle-aged guy who still listens to the same music he listened to in high school, I'm not buyin' what they're sellin'.

I think the general trend in a stable society is for most things to keep getting better.
not to say there aren't dry spells lacking in good content

I tend to agree, Heretical Rants.

This applies, too, in my opinion, to most forms of media. People are always going "blah blah blah was better in the old days." No, everything has always sucked, it's just you mostly remember the gems and have forgotten the crap because the latter tends to be forgettable (unless it was so bad that it somehow became kinda good in an unintentionally hilarious way, like Zardoz).

I admit I'm kinda jumping into the middle of the discussion without having read the previous 29 pages.

what, you mean the 29 pages of

"oh hey, this was good, have you seen this?"

"ooo, good lineup this time,"

"oooo, bad lineup this time,"

"Yo, Boogie Loogie Rendan got a new season"
"Excellent!"

"Hrm, this adaptation was kind of disappointing"

"yoooooooo, Popular Anime #3728 is kinda 'meh' to me"
"yeah, me too"

"OMFG {title} IS GREAT"

ok there you're all caught up now

I'd also like to point out that certain old anime seem worse to me than they used to, partly because the language is more familiar to my ears, now, and bad voice acting M̰A̜̖̦͙͍̳͎Ḳ̭̠̙ͅE̲̙͓S̖͚ ͈̙I̫̦̪͚T̥͔͉͇̼̩S̰ ̼̪̝PRE̹̗̲̞̞̻S̮̣E͇͕N̮͇̗CE̦̠ ̟̟̝͓̩K̖͓̝̦N̝͔O̙͍W͕N̞̬͚ to me more clearly as a direct consequence.

this process is functioning as the ultimate anti-nostalgia and might be influencing my opinion here
gaaahhhh

I'm not disagreeing with you, but the music analogy only works so-so. In terms of mainstream, the de-regulation of the radio networks (where they let people own more than 6 stations or whatever the limit was) gave rise to Clear Channel and basically turned mainstream music to shit. I mean, it's quantitatively provable that popular music has lost it's variety if nothing else, BUT, and this is a big BUT, popular music isn't as popular as popular music used to be. It's much more diluted and fractioned and what not.

Back to anime, Cowboy Bebop proves you're saying BTW. It use to have a rating on ANN of 9.67/10.00 or something like that, but now it's down to 8.9/10.00. IT's not that it got worse, it's just that the standards by which it was compared to got higher. Even the top three, Steins;Gate, Clannad, and FMA:B aren't as highly rated as the tope rated works used to be.

And it was gradual, over time. And there's a lot of factors. I mean, look at what the people who made Cowboy Bebop were watching. AS nostalgic as they are, Robotech (Macross), Voltron, Project A-Ko, Fist of the North Star, Sailor Moon, even New Dominion: Tank Police -- none of those are as good as what came later, which again has been usurped by new stuff.

I mean, look at Hunter x Hunter. People who try to argue that the original was better make me have violent urges. It's just simply not.

I mean, there's those series and movies that hold up better like Akira (despite raping the manga) and Tenchi, but they're not the "ground breaking" master pieces they once were.

It's like Citizen Kane. I can appreciate why it's so important in cinematic history, but for fucks sake, people who argue that it's the best movie ever are just being dishonest. Just because you did it first or sooner doesn't mean you did it the best nor that anyone will do it better afterwards.

Kyoukai no Kanata aka Beyond the Boundary is of to a pretty good start. The premise starts off with some exceedingly stock characters, but the story is starting off well, and good fucking lord is it pretty. I mean, like GiTS pretty.

So this new lineup seems full of potential, but there's no way to know where it's going to go.

If you liked Season 1 of Kuroko, well, it's more of the same, which is fine by me. It better enjoy itself as the best sports anime out there while it can.

Golden Time (to lazy to look up the Japanese name) had me in tears laughing. There's some memory loss thing going on (according to the description), but if it wasn't for that I wouldn't know it was happening at all. We'll see how it's gonna unfold, but I'm very hopeful.

Log Horizon is somewhat of a cross between Sword Art Online (less serious) and Ixion Saga DT (less ridiculous), yet also has me hopeful.

Outbreak Company seems like it might be an entertaining take on the "Only your otakuness can save us" sort of trope, but we'll see.

I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job seemed like it could be the next Devil is a Part Timer, but the gratuitous-to-the-point-of-annoying fanservice killed it for me.

Strike the Blood is another trope type, the one where the protagonist in now all powerful yet has amnesia and people want to kill him, but it's done very well so far, so we'll see.

What's the deal with the series with impossibly long names that keep cropping up lately?

How about Meganebu ? It's short, one word, and ridiculously funny.

But longest title probably goes to: My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy or (俺の脳内選択肢が、学園ラブコメを全力で邪魔している Ore no Nōnai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Come o Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru) aka Noucome (のうコメ Nōkome)

Okay I need some good opinions on the anime Kill La Kill without having people scream murder and blood from all sides. I heard all kinds of things, how it's fanservice but with the awareness of it, female empowerment, creepy rape scenes, etc. So what's the deal? Can I watch it without feeling triggered? Can I deal with the fanservice or will it become too much?
