So GOP lawmakers tried to reopen the WWII memorial and failed.

But science is poison! All you need to cure these diseases is an ALL NATURAL diet. Why, it can even cure autisim! *twitch*

/In all seriousness, though, screw you, Jenny McCarthy, for helping launch this damn shit mainstream.

Silk Road has been shut down. They (joint operation - DEA, FBI, Homeland Security, etc) have seized the servers and arrested the operator.

The shutdown has hit the government so hard it's closing parks it neither funds nor operates.

Quote:
National Park Officials closed down the educational Claude Moore Colonial Farm near the CIA in McLean, Va., even though the federal government doesn't fund or staff the park popular with children and schools. Just because the privately-operated park is on Park Service land, making the federal government simply its landlord, the agency decided to close it.

A Claude Moore Colonial Farm official said that the privately-funded staff is on the job Wednesday, but barred from letting anybody visit the historically accurate buildings or animals. Anna Eberly, the managing director, sent out an email decrying the decision and rude National Park Service staff handling the closure.

Pointing to Park Service claims that parks have to be closed because the agency can’t afford staff during the government closure, Eberly wrote: “What utter crap. We have operated the Farm successfully for 32 years after the NPS cut the Farm from its budget in 1980 and are fully staffed and prepared to open today. But there are barricades at the Pavilions and entrance to the Farm. And if you were to park on the grass and visit on your own, you run the risk of being arrested. Of course, that will cost the NPS staff salaries to police the Farm against intruders while leaving it open will cost them nothing.”

I checked a map. It looks like the private operation is surrounded entirely by national park lands, depending on park entrances and access roads. All of which would conceivably be closed as part of closing national parks during the shutdown. Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

I wonder how that squares with easement laws. If a person's house was surrounded by a national park with a road through the park for access, would they be trapped in or out of their home for the duration?

I wouldn't know. The farm is not actually private property, just run by a non-profit.

The REAL story behind Captain Phillips:

A new Tom Hanks movie says Captain Phillips is the hero who saved his men when pirates attacked...but now a $50million lawsuit says he risked their lives

Quote:
The ship’s Captain portrayed by Tom Hanks in a forthcoming Hollywood movie is at the centre of a $50million lawsuit – brought by the very men whose lives he is credited with saving.

According to legal papers seen by MailOnline, the true story of the Maersk Alabama – the US cargo vessel captured by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden four years ago – is not a simple narrative of Captain Richard Phillips’s personal sacrifice in the face of extreme danger.

Instead it is a story of corporate greed and hubris, in which Phillips captained his ship against more than seven maritime warnings and his own men's pleas, sailing deep into waters notorious for pirate attack.

Some bullet points:

Quote:
Two pirate attacks and more than 7 warnings went ignored as Phillips captained the Maersk Alabama deep into the danger zone

Claim he boasted he 'wasn't scared of pirates'

Ships told to sail no closer than 680miles from the Somali coast; the Maersk was just 270miles from it when pirates seized it on 8 April 2009

Crew members 'galled' by seeing Phillips feted a hero in Hollywood and the White House

Four years after their pirate ordeal a court date has been set

Alright, so I finished my application and clicked submit - only to have an error pop up. Called the suggested number, which said they're not actually taking online submissions right now, and said if I wanted a paper app mailed to me I could request one. Wait time is 30 minutes, though, and I don't have time for that.

I don't get why they don't have a "Print your application or request a physical application" via the website.

Quote:
UPDATE 3:40 p.m. EDT: Capitol Police said they have no information that the incident was related to terrorism. It appears to be an isolated incident, according to authorities.

UPDATE 3:32 p.m. EDT: Capitol Police are expected to give a news conference momentarily on the incident. You can follow a live stream of the press conference here.

UPDATE 3:27 p.m. EDT: Politico is reporting that a child was one of two people removed from the vehicle that attempted to ram the White House gate. A man was also taken out of the vehicle.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/u-s-capitol-shooting-began-after-car-rammed-barricade-1.1894656

Quote:
A woman driving a black Lexus tried to ram through a White House barricade Thursday, then led police on a chase that ended in gunfire outside the Capitol, witnesses and officials said.

Tourists watched the shooting unfold on Constitution Avenue outside the Capitol as lawmakers inside debated how to end a government shutdown. Police quickly locked down the entire complex for about an hour, and both houses of Congress went into recess.

And so the insanity continues.

Did the woman in the car have a gun, or was in just the police shooting at her? Everything I'm seeing now is vague - "ended in gunfire," "shots were fired," etc., all passive voice...

Edit: http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/03/politics/u-s-capitol-shooting-main/index.html?c=mobile-homepage-t&page=2 CNN is now saying "Multiple sources told CNN that it is not believed at this point any shots were fired from the car and no weapon has been found so far." So it's still crazy that she tried to... drive into the Capital building? I don't know.

It would appear only police did the shooting.

The woman in the car is also confirmed dead, shot by police. Also confirmed, there was a baby in the car which was taken to hospital for examination.

http://www.heavy.com/news/2013/10/capitol-shooting-shots-fired-capitol-building/

This story is sounding more and more bizarre. A woman, driving what seems to be a $60,000 or $70,000 car with a baby in the back tries to ram the gates of the White House, resulting in her being shot by police, all in a very crowded area.

How completely and utterly nutterly.

Edit: To cap it all off, it appears the woman was forced over on Constitution Avenue, abandoned her vehicle, and was shot by the Secret Service while attempting to escape on foot?
