Good news! Orson Scott Card won't make any money from ticket sales to Ender's Game.

i've never read the novel, just the original short story, but (judging from what i've heard about the movie) it seems to present ender in a rather different light than the short story. anyone read/compared the two? or maybe it is just the movie...

Remember, if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.

But remember, the police are on your side!

Except when they aren't and they actually physically rape you and subject you to invasive and non-consensual medical procedures.

The plaintiff will probably get an out of court settlement in money drawn from the taxpayers, teaching them a lesson about... well, nothing really, since it'll come out of their taxes. The officers involved might get fired but their union will step in and cite that they weren't properly trained not to insist on illegal enemas for suspects based on how they were standing, and eventually get reinstated to their positions and receive back pay for any time missed.

Woo.

Okay Odocha, M.D.

i'm sorta wondering if someone is pulling my leg, now.

surely there must be some compensation, though, in watching cops and doctors sift through your shit 3 times and finding nothing. one has to wonder exactly how far up his ass they thought the guy could stick things.

I heard baggies of cocaine can cause a wicked case of appendicitis.

Don't tell the MD's that though, or they might give you an appendectomy to go with your colonoscopy.

Anyways, if this was a hoax, it'd be a pretty impressive one, fooling multiple large news organizations who would have to falsify interviews and court records.

So in the end everyone wins . . .

except of course the taxpayers

Be remarkably ignorant of the issues and the history of our country, sticking us with tax rates approximately half of what people pre-reagan thought the country needed in order to operate properly and also the tea party?

Newsflash! Most herbal remedies/supplements sampled were actually just junk. Sometimes potentially allergenic and toxic junk.

I'm pretty happy about that industry getting bad publicity whenever it happens, yeah.

The Stranger:How Kshama Sawant Won Last Night's Election
or put another way
New City Collegian: Sawant Takes Home 46% but Leaves the Game Changed
Only a third of the votes have been counted though, and in both previous races the later ballotdrops favoured Sawant, increasing by 2-3% So still possible. Even more possible in 2 years time though with the new district based city council elections.

MSNBC: Socialists made strong showing on election day

"In a closer race, Socialist challenger Kshama Sawant inched up to 46.71 percent of the vote, but appears to have little chance of catching incumbent Seattle City Councilman Richard Conlin.

No matter. The Sawant camp has celebrated as if it were the Paris Commune, 1917 in St. Petersburg, WTO in Seattle and the fall of Saigon all at once.

The Stranger proclaimed her victorious. The candidate, in a fiery election night speech, quoting Trotsky and depicting Conlin as Seattle’s washed-up Alexander Kerensky, declaring: “Richard Conlin is finished. He may collect his salary for another two years, but he has no political future.”

Sawant, a former Occupy Seattle activist who teaches at Seattle Central Community College. has indicated she will come gunning for Conlin again in two years. Seattle switches to a district election system in 2015. Both Sawant and Conlin, who’ll be serving his fifth term, live in the same district.

Colin has said he won’t seek reelection. But Sawant held out hope Wednesday that she won’t have to wait until 2015. “This isn’t over,” she said, saying there is a chance that Conlin can be sent into Kerensky-like political exile before 2015." Link

Also another reflection on yesterdays election, from CounterPunch, includes this completely fair question:
Quote:
WFP, WTF?

A good indication occurred in Syracuse, NY where long time Green activist Howie Hawkins, whose previous campaign against an machine Democrat failed by 94 votes, this time went down by a slightly larger margin. The difference did not reflect a lack of support but rather the presence of the Working Families Party, which, as the Syracuse Post Standard reported ”hired paid canvassers and coordinated an intensive get-out-the-vote effort on (Hawkins’s opponent’s) behalf during the past few weeks.”

This is only the most recent chapter in the long and increasingly sordid history of the WFP which during the last gubernatorial election, showed its true colors as a pawn of Democratic Party leadership by supporting the union busting “Governor 1%” Andrew Cuomo.

Increasingly true to form, rather than aiding numerous Democrats against Republican competition, (for example, here) the WFP turned its fire against the left, supporting a bland, corporate centrist in Syracuse. Their rationale for doing so was pithily summarized by one of the paid WFP out-of-town “organizers” who declared on social media that “A victory for Hawkins tomorrow would be worse for the progressive cause than any other victory for a Right Winger.”

Can anyone explain this nonsense?
