I hear later in season 4 Lord Grantham gets amnesia and believes he's a servant until he's hit in the head and remembers he has a twin brother who swore to kill him and take his place.

Also, a servant does something a servant isn't supposed to do and is chastised, then repents.

I actually really like Downton Abbey.

She is awesome. I hope this tactic gains more popularity, and up through the levels of government. Bigots who hide behind their bible-bashing as an excuse to deny (or destroy) rights to other people need to have their bluff called.

seems there is a bit of a difference between ordering other people to do something, and actually face doing it yourself.

although i guess it could be that he would in fact be willing to throw the first stone - just not on camera.

Because, as we all know, the aristocracy in WWI england was really a bastion of Liberalism. Nothing more liberal than stuffy aristocrat victorians.

/Seriously this is just silly.

yeah, my take is that lord grantham is coming off as a bit of a pig-headed idiot who has to be rescued by his solidly middle-class son-in-law or his irish-socialist son-in-law and even (heaven forbid!) his daughter.

plus there is all that stuff that makes it quite explicitly clear that brains were deemed unnecessary even for upper-class women, all of whom existed only to breed (and to shut up while they do it). while simultaneously making clear that any women, of whatever social status, who bred without the benefit of wedlock was a whore who deserved to be destroyed by whatever method was appropriate for her social class. so as always, the patriarchy had its drawbacks for those not in the driver's seat.

also, it's not a soap, it's clearly a carefully-researched historical study. i mean, look at how authentic all the houses and clothing and stuff are! you don't find that kind of attention to detail in a mere soap!

Apparently the clothes are starting to smell a bit, too, since they can't wash them easily/safely.

Well, it does beg the question...are the climate scientists in bed with the gay lobby (see what I did there?)? Or why would they try to suppress this obvious alternative, totally scientific, reason for the increase in flooding? I wonder...

BALL LIGHTNING!
Exactly what it sounds like.
No, not that. Grow up, sheesh. It's a spherical electric phenomenon that occurs sometimes during thunderstorms. It's so rare that it's often dismissed as a hallucination. We've never been able to really reproduce it under plausible conditions in the lab, and it's never been caught on film by scientists in the wild.
Until now. And those scientists just happened to have exactly the type of equipment needed to study it. Turns out that ball lightning is probably made of dirt!

Considering he's an UKIP politician he likely doesn't believe in global warming.

Also petition to rename global warming to gaybal warming?

The situation in the Ukraine is very rapidly deteriorating, in case anyone hadn't noticed.

Apparently tanks are entering Kiev at the moment.

Thats kind of why I was surprised it hadn't been posted here yet.

TBH I get most of my daily news from this thread.

Heh, I have a bad habit of not posting things I hear regularly, despite the fact that they could be interesting to talk about.

I don't post everything I read about, either. When there's too much for me going on, I sometimes just want to read and know what's happening without having to discuss it.
