Well, amongst other things, Clancy was a diehard GOP supporter and blamed 9/11 on "teh liberals" . . . so I wanted to emphasize that it's his works that I'll be missing.

Glad I'm not the only one who disliked Clancy's views:

i can't believe no one has posted it yet:
pete seeger.

i'm tempted to blame stephen colbert for killing him - colbert won the grammy seeger was up for.

Today, the world was made a little sadder: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/02/philip-seymour-hoffman-dead-dies_n_4713623.html?1391366139
This story only just broke like 20 minutes before this posting, so no one really knows much at this point. Still, it is a loss.

Does the Hoffman fellow, Ms Black and Mr Ceasar count as the three? Y'know, when one celeb dies and then another, everyone looks for the third death to make a pattern.

(Shirley Temple Black, in case you hadn't heard)

Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church.
It would be easy to celebrate the death of such an overwhelming asshat who dedicated most of his life to scamming clients out of money, harassing targets with barratry, waging cultural war against human beings for arbitrary reasons, trolling grieving families in their moment of need for the publicity and chance to sue people who react to such, and not least for raising an entire compound full of like-minded human wastes that do absolutely nothing productive for society at large but continually hurt individuals and families for the sake of worsening the general human condition.
It raises interesting questions about the utility of despising bad people, the moral implications of schadenfreude, whether it's better to ignore the shit-stirrers even at their most despicable.

It would also easy for me to say that we shouldn't hate the man, because he was obviously broken in the head, and that our hatred of him makes us no better off than we were before, maybe even drags us down a notch closer to his level without the benefit of mental illness to excuse it. It would be easy for me to say these things because I've never been a target for him and his family of trolls, attention whores, and rent-seekers.

Now I'm not saying it's related, and certainly not endorsing any specific reaction to the man's timely demise, but today just happens to be the UN's declared International Day of Happiness.
