fortunately, i have never had a test lasting 72 hours....i'm not going to check the guidelines (but thank you for offering!) because my veins are starting to twitch at the idea of "fun things" happening to them.

Actually, my grandfather, in his last few months in hospice care, had serious problems with IVs: his hands, wrists, spots on his arms, etc. were turning black (necrosis I assume?) where they had been inserted. I don't know the exact details of what was going on, but I assumed it had to do with the IVs being in too long.

When I have been in hospitals, the main thing I remember about them was needing to use the washroom all the time.

Sounds like it could have been extravasation caused by brittle veins. Whether it was necrotic is hard to say without seeing it. Sometimes the vessels in older people don't withstand the IV catheter well, and the fluid being infused leaks out. If the medication is harmful in large doses it can damage the surrounding tissue.

The most common effect of IVs being in place too long is infection, but it's usually in the blood rather than the tissue.

In a new move, I was setup to interview for a position that less than an hours before it was to take place the company called to tell me they were cancelling the entire position.

I didn't even know how to respond.

As much as that sucks, you might take solace in not being employed by a company that doesn't know what it needs. Could've been an awful experience.

Friend: I think [her boyfriend/a close friend of mine] has thrush. How do we treat it?
Me: Antifungal medications. Does he have white spots in his mouth? Does he use an inhaler?
Friend: He doesn't use an inhaler. It's on his testicles.
Me: *head desk* I wish I hadn't asked.

Thrush = candidiasis = yeast infection

A yeast infection of the testicles, folks... that's what I get texts about at 10pm.

Though I did get to say something I don't get the chance to say often: "Put some monistat on his balls."

I've gone 30 years avoiding that very problem and would like to continue to do so.

Oh nice weather! Wait...what the hell is this? oh right, I forgot, I am alllergic to pollen...and apparently the nice weather has brought them out early. Ugh. Why do you hate me, birch tree? I don't hate you, but you're making it kind of tough right now, what with my sinuses, eyes and making every day feeling like a hangover day.

It occurs to me that my present enemy is in fact the elm tree. Birch will come later. I can't wait.
