even though every single point of that is total bunk _________________ butts |

Behold, a TV. Tropes page on the subject - http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MostFanficWritersAreGirls
I don't actually know the current stats on who writes fanfic. My point is part of why it is devalued is because it is viewed as a woman thing. _________________ ::lesser crisis mode::

Overall I think the generalization that most fanfictioneers are female is still holding up. Fanfiction.net's stats have been analyzed sporadically. As of 2010, the finding was that 78% of their fanfictors identified as female.
This probably varies by community to some extent. I think it's likely the brony fanficklers skew more male than not, based on the latest Herd Census data indicating that the fandom itself is 81% male and that at least 15% of the fandom writes fanfic regularly. However, I'm hard-pressed to come up with another specific fandom that's so overwhelmingly male in terms of its online community. Also it would be nice to have stats on this from Fimfiction.net.
Ironically, Hasbro's traditionally male-marketed Transformers franchise has a huge female fanbase and a proportionately inclined community of fictionaires. I think the fan content (discussions, art, wiki contributions, etc.) for that franchise in general might be slightly more male-originated but the fic itself is probably dominated by the ladies. I have no hard data to back that up, though. Just a hunch from personal experience. |

Gosh I really can't imagine how frustrating it must be for someone to dismiss your opinion on something based on your gender.

Did you even read the article that you basically copied from the discussion page of the trope? |

yes, quite so, you were spot-on in your description of prevalent attitudes
I was calling the attitudes bunk, not your comment

Full context:
Quote: | The result was 9544 user profiles with gender identity disclosed. For 2010, this means that 10% of FanFiction.Net members reveal their sex in the profile. This called for a 1.1% (1.3% for 50/50) margin of error at a 99% confidence level.
This data was initially broken into two uneven parts (5005 and 4539) to spot any structural differences between accounts created in the first and second half of 2010. The disclosure rate in the second half of the year was lower than that of older accounts, and the difference was statistically significant (2.4%). FFN Research offers a reasonable experience-driven explanation: there is a time lapse between creating an account on the site, writing a profile and putting one’s personal details on the profile. The explanation is supported by the fact FanFiction.Net enforces time thresholds for when a new registered member may start using a particular service.
Gender distribution, on the other hand, did not have a statistically significant difference in both parts of our sample. The female/male ratio was stable in our sample and stayed remarkably close to rumours that 80% of the site’s users are female.
The sample revealed that 78% of FanFiction.Net members are female, provided they joined in 2010. The remaining 22% self-identify as male. Picture 4 illustrates these. In addition, here is a gender ratio graph. |

Quote: | the content You need is missing. Several researchers I have come in contact with ceased their attempts to find reliable data on the internet, citing a poor information environment. A reasonable choice. It is far easier to work with enthusiasts of other activities, such as sports, as the information is present in ample amounts. Fan fiction is a different story. |
Quote: | In retrospect, the only available information was qualitative, limited to a small community or plain useless for a more general study. |
I shouldn't have to explain why the statistical tricks being used in the article are tantamount to pure speculation, because the author knows all too well the dangerously thin line that is being walked as is mentioned very clearly in the Preamble.
Trusting anonymously submitted user data to be accurate, let alone relevant is already being taken for granted by the study.
Furthermore, the lack of further updates on the blog as well as the data itself leads me to believe that this analysis was abandoned in lieu of more substantial leads to bring to fruition.
That being said, I have a gut feeling that there probably is more female fanfict writers on the site, but I am still confused about why that particular fact is relevant to the article that Samsally posted.
If possible, I would like to hear an explanation. |

It was a minor thing -- the author said that the gender split was 50% male, 50% female.
So, just another part of the article severely lacking in research.
(Note: I'm not saying that the Fanfic community definitely is majority female -- but it's nearly inconceivable that, if he did do research and find that it was actually 50% male, 50% female, he wouldn't have also come across the fact that most people thought it was majority female, and at least mentioned the fact.
Also, yeah, any research at all would have shown him the proper capitalization and the rest of it.) |

I did you a favor by resisting the urge to comment on your culturally insensitive remarks made on the previous page.
Do me a favor by making an attempt to ignore me with some more competence. |

So I know I should stop browsing reddit forever but apparantly I like reading horrible shit.
This topic was recently made in the girl friendly gaming sub
"The "Male Power Fantasy": what do women generally and actually find sexy?"
Pretty reasonable question and good answers up till now with varying opinions resulting from different ladies.
Then comes this guy:
"What do women generally and actually find sexy? Male power."
Of course someone's smart enough to ask why the fuck a straight guy (he's posted this before himself so we all know) would answer this question:
"Uhm.. are you a fella telling us what women find sexy?"
His response:
"No, I'm a marketer telling you what women who read romance novels' spending habits says they find sexy."
It's really embarassing when he starts talking about women who read romance novels in an area where women are obsessed with games (like most of us proudly post pictures of our habitat which always has computers and consoles and talk about how we wake up to read MMO Champion et al). But what really horrifies me is that this guy, a marketer, thinks that general stereotypes and tropes actually apply in real life. Even a group of women who read the same romance novels together could have a totally different idea of what they find sexy in a guy. It enrages me whenever people aren't considered to be individuals.
Advice for everyone: Less assuming, more research. |
