I'm a bit worried about this.

Slick, even if you do nice things, doesn't mean 'Nique owes you anything! If Slick tries to "buy" 'Nique's love with all those glitters, I'm going to be really disappoint. But if he ends up becoming a better person, and if she JUST HAPPENS to like the person he's become, then it might be ok.

Mr. Ishida, you're pushing a fine line there. Tread carefully.

How's it a fine line? What you don't want to happen is exactly what's likely to happen and also just makes the most sense.

Slick is an idiot who learns the hard way from mistakes. He needs to fuck up REALLY BAD before he can make real change as a person.

I'm pretty sure the reason they don't talk is because she can see through him very easily.

My current theory on the glasses: Maybe Sleaze is leaving them there on purpose. He can't get Slick to behave the way he thinks Slick should any other way. At least wearing the glasses is putting Slick in the mindset that works for Sleaze.

It may not be significant, but in that last panel, Sleaze is sleeping as well instead of running off to do the usual things.

...so the general assumption is that the pricetag falling off of her was not indicative of anything, but merely a means via which Slick could figure out what he needs to "buy" her?

Nique has always been a person more impressed with good actions than money or talk. The glasses probably hyperbole that by giving her a cost in glitter points, a "currency" only gained by doing selfless deeds. Slick does indeed want to "buy" her but in order to do so he'll have to continue being selfless.

The "price" is pretty damn high so he'll have to loads of good things to earn glitter. Considering the reason to get them is something sinister and considered morally evil (buying a person), Slick either gives up because it takes too long or throughout his many good deeds realize there's more to be gained by being nice.

Or knowing Tat, something intervenes. Tat ex Machina.

I'm finding this hard to understand. What is up with his heart? It's the swiss army knife of emotions. Can it directly affect him? because that heart has been through a lot, yet he doesn't look like he's changed at all.
Cupid shot his heart, nothing happened.
He (or was it Sleaze?) used his heart as payment for porn, nothing happened.
Someone to a freakin' sledgehammer to the thing. nothing happened.
It was frozen, last time I saw it, now it's a piggy bank?

Is that heart even his any more? Damn, I wish I could find out. I don't like leaving questions unanswered...

I see Slick's heart as mainly being a convenient visual metaphor for whatever is happening with him emotionally. We've seen it representing everything from lust, to love, to hurt feelings, to his emotional closed-off-ness. Because this is a comic, the things that happen to his heart are necessarily exaggerated and don't have consequences like you would expect for an object in the real world. It doesn't pay to be too literal with them. At the moment, Slick's heart is a piggy-bank because he's become driven by consumerism and is thinking of emotional things (such as relationships) only in terms of financial transactions, probably as a result of donning Sleaze's glasses. Before, it was frozen over to represent his emotional isolation and refusal to allow himself to be vulnerable enough to experience love. We've seen all these things reflected in his actions too.

Also, last time we saw Slick's heart before this, it had actually thawed already.

I also wouldn't say that "nothing happened" when Cupid shot Slick's heart, since that was what prompted him to lock it inside the safe in the first place.

It's true that Slick hasn't changed a whole lot over the course of all this, but that's an issue with his (lack of) character development, which other people have already mentioned in this thread. Like OklahomanSun said, Tat uses Slick as a foil for certain concepts, and if Slick's character were to evolve, he wouldn't be able to play that role any more and a replacement would need to be found. Rather like how Sleaze moved in to take Li'l E's place as the resident prankster after Li'l E suffered amnesia and a personality transplant.

thats a good point- in thus case, it does seem likely that shell become aware of his scheme relatively quickly. if so then it would seem that she cannot be bought (despite the price tag)

Huh... his heart is broke, though. He wasn't invested in others, so others weren't invested in him.
...though that doesn't entirely make sense 'cause I would think his best friend Squig still had some level of investment in his happiness. Unless Squig is a bad-enough friend that he wouldn't help Slick out if he was in trouble.
I'm probably overanalyzing.
ANYway, sharing love and affection, doing "good deeds" to improve the lives of those around him will definitely contribute to his having a valuable heart, since it'll encourage others to be invested in his happiness and love.

Thus, one way or another, building up "sparkle points" is something he needed to do, anyway.

The thing I see that's actually changed about Slick here is that he's being a little more deliberately calculating about things that he has ALWAYS done anyway.

Really, it's not exactly new for Slick to try to push things forward with Monique by either pretending at or leveraging moments of moral sensitivity. Not new. He's done that plenty in the past. The glasses are encouraging him to do so again, this time more deliberately. The willfulness is definitely more of an "evil" step. (The evil grin panel made me want to punch his face just to make the world a better place.)

I do think this is still development, because it's on the other side of the heart freeze and thaw. He's trying again. But the heart is still locked away. He's not ready to make real human connection--there's still a lot of work to do there--but he still wants what he wants, and is only thinking in terms of what he wants and how he's going to get it. So, he's falling back on bad past behaviors that are now reinforced by his current inability to see things outside of his own dark side's jaded point of view.

No, I rarely get physical responses like that from fiction. I was trying to cleverly say that I'm quite frightened at the emotional response I got.
