yea

If I hadn't been doing the audiobook thing I would have barely even skimmed that particular conflict

but it isn't just the women - every significant character is terrible in the early books

and I lost interest completely in the later books

I don't even remember for sure which book I dropped the series on -- somewhere between book five and ten
or maybe as late as eleven
all I know is that I sort of vaguely know what happens in the first ten books and that I'd rather read pony fanfiction if I'm just reading for entertainment anyway -- and there isn't anything other than entertainment to be had from the series

Y'know, I hadn't thought about it, but that is something of a problem with the series. You could make an argument for Murphy, Luccio, Georgia, Charity, or even Mab (once you understand her motivations) later in the series, but yeah... the first couple books don't really have a good female character.

(Early books Murph is just an asshole.)

That said, the quality of the series overall does improve quite a bit once you to and through Grave Peril.

Thanks for all of the feedback. Amazon was putting the Kindle versions on a 1-day sale for $1.99 each. Actually, just the first seven books, which I went ahead and bought. Since Grave Peril is the third book, I should have four good ones to read. =) I've read the first couple of chapters of Storm Front.

Based on what I read about the author and how he got started, Fris' comment doesn't surprise me.

Have you ever noticed that you can reword something, but you never word it? Clearly the root of reword is to word, but we never say, "You need to word this assignment."

I have a new goal.

I do believe "word it" is tumblrese for "write". In context:

"I have an assignment and I can't word at all."

I've seen the elsewhere, used by people who could very well be on Tumblr.

They also use the word 'brain' for thinking. "I can't brain today!" Which I really love.

Great, I just invented tumblrspeak in a fit of inspiration.

For my next trick, let me anthropomorphize a shiba inu and tell you about it.

You've never told someone "You need to word this assignment properly."?

I hope the irony isn't completely lost, but yeah, Thy's right e.g. "How should I word this question?" Also, I'm too lazy to look, but I wanna say it's an idiomatic informal (but maybe not informal) expression involving "word choice" and/or "word order".

No, the first point is well taken (despite Thy's snark). I was editing someone's paper and posted without thinking it through. Smile I'm not sure what you mean in the second point... it doesn't seem particularly idiomatic to me, but maybe that's just because using words that are normally nouns as verbs doesn't seem odd (I'm not sure "to word" is less literal than "a word"), but clearly this isn't my area of expertise.

Well, when you talk about "how to word something" it could be used to mean a few different things which are closely related. I suppose the more accurate term would be to call it metonymic as opposed to idiomatic (I hadn't had coffee yet when I wrote that first post) because depending on how the speaker means it, it could cover just part of writing (syntax) or it could be used more inclusively (covering syntax, word choice, tone, voice, connotation, etc.)

When I spoke of 'irony', I was referring to the fact that it's Thy talking about how to word things.

Thy: don't think I'm trying to insult you, I'm really not. It's just honestly, sometimes I have a REALLY hard time understanding you based solely upon how you word things, and even though I am often snarky to you I really do try to understand what you post.

Has anyone ever gotten a job because of their LinkedIn profile? I have a profile, and I get connection invitations, but I've mostly ignored the site.

I know one lady that met her boyfriend on LinkedIn. I have enough boyfriends, though. I don't need a service for that.

All LinkedIn ever does is remind me of my ex and how he still exists. I think I've -finally- razed the account to the ground enough for it to -just stop-.

So definitely no job offers.

It's nice to have at least one place where a general internet search for your name will turn up with something that's at least somewhat relevant to employers

if you don't manage something like that yourself then LinkedIn seems like a good idea to me

it's not going to move all of your career networking to one spot online or anything, but it can make your online presence a little more useful in that regard

just a smidge

don't waste inordinate amount of time on it
