Fuchsia, look, it's a symbolic representation of Forky! With only one tine! He(?)'s pining without you!

Or not.

***

I originally thought that Vainglorious would prove to be (for lack of a better phrase) Future Slick -- for Slick tries in vain to be glorious and is yet glorious in his vanity -- but if Vainglorious not only exists in the present but actually interacts enough with people to get artwork exhibited, I guess not.

I mean, think about it, those works (presumably) didn't just appear out of nowhere, somebody had to physically move them from wherever Vainglorious originally created them to the gallery, so Vainglorious had to talk to the gallery manager to arrange for the display, oversee the exhibits' transport by movers, and so on. Even if Vainglorious created the works IN the gallery, well, there'd still have been the need to arrange things with the gallery manager.

Having work displayed in a Devil gallery might be intended (by Tat) to imply that Vainglorious is a Devil, hard to say.

Significantly easier to say is that it's telling that Fuchsia apparently just presumes that Vainglorious is a man. Precisely what it tells, well, again, hard to say.

Vainglorious was stated to have been hell-born.

So not Nique, not Slick... not Criminy... presumably not Li'l E, either.

(I mean, it seems Lilith gave birth to him on the surface. That's where they were living when he was an infant. Plus Li'l E can't even bomf, he doesn't want to overthrow D-man, is half-human, and he doesn't really have... that stature...)

I'm not sure it's Tat's self insert, either, really. Because I doubt he's hell-born. But I guess you never know.

That might mean "birth" in a metaphorical sense, though. I mean, after all, it is a prophecy, how comprehensible should we expect it to be?

Maybe, in some preposterous way, it's Story Time Zombie. Personality-wise, he seems to have for all intent and purpose simply sprung into existence when he emerged from Hell.

As later strips make clear, he knows little if anything about the world, yet as a damned soul, he was presumably alive in the world before he was dead. He doesn't seem to remember anything from his previous life, not even as much as Tange remembers hers.

All he remembered when he climbed out of Hell was "story time" and "Foosha." He was later shown to also remember Blue tormenting him and the other damned souls. Blue tormenting him and Fuchsia telling him stories, that pretty much constituted the entirety of his existence in Hell.

Thus, his memories apparently start in Hell. I can only presume that what we're intended to take away form that is that he, the individual who is Story Time Zombie, did not exist as such prior to being condemned to Hell.

Thus, born in Hell. Metaphorically.

Not that I think for a minute that Story Time Zombie is Vainglorious, I'm just elaborating on a perspective. Smile

i'm wondering if it could be Sleaze, who does seem to share Slick's vanity and lust for glory - but unlike slick, does not seem to suffer from bouts of feeling inadequate. i thought the prophet said something about 'devil-kin', which Sleaze is...but i'm not sure if being split off a mortal by bomfing constitutes being hell-born. he does seem to be into graffiti and destruction, and i'm guessing he has the ego to think he could overthrow the d-man.

and we know he goes wandering around when slick is asleep; he could have done his artwork and gallery-arranging then.
