Hey guys Smile I got my assignment mark back today. I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't an especially high one, nor my best mark by any means, but this is my favourite module, so I had hoped... I did well on the analysis of Sinfest, but my grasp of The Escapist's online community (my chosen journalistic community) wasn't as thorough. I was told I show a really good grasp of "soft" social dynamics - so like user interaction and so on - but I fell down on hard analytics like metrics. Metrics are boring. -_- Anyway, my feedback also featured this key line:

"Excellent interviewing of the community."

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Awesome work, guys! I am so indebted to you all for helping me out with this and giving me such great context and history to base my analysis on. I loved reading your responses and my assignment was undoubtedly 1000x better as a result, so thank you, thank you, thank you.

*cookies all around*

oooo cookies!

sorry your grade wasn't better - but clearly it is all the fault of The Escapist's online community. them, and their journalistic metrics.

Sorry your grade wasn't better, but congrats on the feedback.

Also, metrics are super important. So. Razz

Kinda? I mean, I do get why they're important, I guess I just don't have my head around them as well as I do social community dynamics. Since I was looking at two forums-based communities (and Sinfest doesn't have much social media to speak of), I didn't think I needed to spend as much time on things like Twitter engagement rates. I'm not even sure what metrics would look like for a forums community, so that might be something I should ask my lecturer about. Maybe I shot myself in the foot by doing two forums, but it's what I know... x3

Metrics? Like numbers?

*fumbles around for a dictionary.*

"1. the use or study of poetic meters; prosody.
2. a method of measuring something, or the results obtained from this.
"the report provides various metrics at the class and method level"

Um.....

Yeah. You use metrics to measure specific things to help you understand them better. An obvious example is how long it takes to run a race. That metric (length of time) lets us know if people who ran races at different times are faster than one another, if they set a record, etc. The vast majority of science depends on first defining how you're going to measure what you're studying, so you can see if it changes over time, or between individuals, or whatever.

Thanks Dogen. I'd heard the word before but wasn't quite sure that I unsterstood it, and what I looked up wasn't helping that much either.
