I think the effort and focus devoted to "fixing" habits is what keeps thoughts about them at the forefront. Being in a state of war against bad habits is just as surely a form of bondage as being a slave to them.

Paul said some cool stuff about that, specifically that the law serves only to aggravate transgression against the law.
He reasons that the only real purpose of the law is to make our dependence upon God for our 'righteousness' all the more obvious. |

Simply put. The only thing that keeps us from acting like complete animals is society's law and the fear of retribution (or becoming someone's dinner mint in prison).
Or you're the pious type, fear of cosmic retribution (and I don't mean karma)... which happens to be a bitch all on her own.

Not quite true. We're designed as basically reciprocally altruistic animals (with a very large margin of adaptation), so while we will behave in a hell of a lot more "immoral" ways if society falls apart, there will still be some lingering tendencies to be "good".

I'm sure there will be those of us that do cling to that moral foundation... albeit very few.
