So I realise I sound terribly naive. But that factory in Houston, the one that exploded poisonous smoke all over an already flooded neighbourhood. Their stuff exploded because it was flooded and the electricity failed. But... they knew that was going to happen. Didn't they? Even if there was vastly more rain than expected, they knew a hurricane was on its way and there was going to be a lot of water. So... why didn't they take precautions? Even apart from the moral angle, wouldn't that have been cheaper?

this is texas.

in most other states a salting system would have been a legally required installation for such a chemical plant and would have allowed them to neutralize the toxic/explosion hazard when they knew the plant was going to be flooded.

texas does not regulate its industry to require such things.

therefore, the chemical plant had no precautions it could take.

additionally, texas laws make it impossible for houston to be allowed to zone appropriately, so people lived right next to this plant. yes. residential zoning next to a chemical plant.

the company that owned the chemical plant had successfully lobbied as part of a long term effort to removing such protections. so, as far as the company was concerned, they took every available precaution — insofar as loss insurance is concerned. the rest is on the people.

Every so often I wonder what it would be like to have been born in America.

And then I see shit like this and realise I would've been dead before my 13th birthday.

nonsense - we're the greatest! we don't need stuff like healthcare and industrial regulations and safety nets because we are just way to great for stuff like that!

yeah....it gets harder and harder to listen to rhetoric like that, and know that we are no long the innovators, the trend-setters, that other countries have figured out ways to make life so much safer and better for their people, and we don't because we are just too pigheaded to acknowledge that we can learn anything from anyone else.

and also: business-friendly! because that's way more important than people-friendly.

so it seems there is a pretty good study demonstrating that ship exhausts cause more lightning over shipping channels (actually more intense thunderstorms, but they first noted the increased incidence of lightning).

why just over shipping channels? ships burn dirtier fuel when out at sea; dirtier fuel means more aerosols (soot, nitrogen and sulfur compounds). and more aerosols means - i'll just quote:
Quote:
When more aerosols are added to the air, like from ship exhaust, water molecules have more particles to collect around. More cloud droplets form, but they are smaller. Being lighter, these smaller droplets travel higher into the atmosphere and more of them reach the freezing line, creating more ice, which creates more lightning. Storm clouds become electrified when ice particles collide with each other and with unfrozen droplets in the cloud. Lightning is the atmosphere's way of neutralizing that built-up electric charge.

so a rather neat little study that human activity does, indeed, impact the weather, at least. not that it's going to change anyone's mind on climate change.

martin shkreli seems to be determined to go down in history as the creepiest guy ever.
Quote:
Martin Shkreli, the former pharmaceutical executive who is awaiting sentencing for a fraud conviction, was sent to jail on Wednesday after a federal judge found that he presented a threat to the community because he had offered money for a strand of Hillary Clinton’s hair.

Mr. Shkreli, who was free on $5 million bail while he awaited sentencing, offered $5,000 on Facebook to anyone who could “grab a hair” from Mrs. Clinton during her book tour.

“There has been a danger presented through this post,” Judge Kiyo A. Matsumoto said at the hearing in Federal District Court in Brooklyn.

At the same hearing, Mr. Shkreli was scheduled to be sentenced in January. He most likely will not be released before then, unless his lawyers can show that he is not a threat.

What the fuck is wrong with that guy? Hillary should throw a handful of hair in every audience during her tour, bankrupt him. Even more.

She should be selling strands of hair for a dollar a pop in the lobby after the show.

https://www.nu.nl/opmerkelijk/4937990

On Sunday, Dutch police apprehended a man who was driving around with a large number of XTC pills and considerable quantities of ketamine.

Police decided to stop and search the vehicle after noticing a large sticker on the car's rear window, reading "I love ketamine".

When confronted, the driver immediately handed over four bags of white powder.

The exact contents of these bags is still uncertain, but police strongly suspect the bags contain ketamine.

Somebody doesn't know that ket is for horses.

saudia arabia has decided to let women drive.

love the explanations they have used for explaining why women had to be prevented from driving:
Quote:
Some said that it was inappropriate in Saudi culture for women to drive, or that male drivers would not know how to handle women in cars next to them. Others argued that allowing women to drive would lead to promiscuity and the collapse of the Saudi family. One cleric claimed — with no evidence — that driving harmed women’s ovaries.
