I heard it was a day where the rich used to give the poor their leftovers in boxes, but Wikipedia gives multiple possible origins.

It's the day that we give our used Xmas gift boxes to our cats, because cats love boxes. It's a practice that dates back to ancient Egyptian times.

Well, instead of a bowl of popcorn, we can settle in with a nice assortment of poffertjes and stroopwafels. I really miss my grandma, I have to buy the bakery version of stroopwafels now.
