Well if you really want to get into it, Seymour was willing to pay "change" for "soul-saving". Change being like a quarter and what-not.
Than this ATM machine asks him to give up ALL his money. As it has been said before, Seymour is still a human and as a human he'll still hesitate to give up ALL his wordly possessions rather than a few quarters.
Seymour is a human first, fanboy second. |

The strip with the salvation vending machine points out how awful it is that some religious leaders tell their followers that they are required to pay money for salvation.

It is irrelevant to the moral issue whether the religion requires some of your money or all of it.

Seymour is a caricature of a mindless far-far-right Fundamentalist. He is a sheep. He obeys any voice of religious authority, even (especially!) when that authority is fleecing him. He will not question the ATM, because it has a cross in its logo.

the atm doesn't refer to salvation, per se - it infers regarding devotion. |

Major Tom:
I don't think Seymour would (or could, at this point in his development) draw such a distinction.
PsycoMonkey:
and... G'day!

you didn't refer the Seymour; you referred to the "point" of the strip.
you missed that finesse of the point. |

You are correct.
I should've responded something more like: | Major Tom wrote: | | the atm doesn't refer to salvation, per se - it infers regarding devotion. |
| the ATM wrote: | | or be a selfish, materialistic, greedy, atheist whore of commerce? |
Selfish, materialistic, greedy, atheist whores of commerce are not saved. It is discussing salvation, rather than mere devotion. |

| the strip focuses on the devotion of 100% "tithing", with a yes/no option. |

It is a religious authority telling its sheep to give it your money or be an atheist. That is not mere tithing.
And the "yes/no option" doesn't mean it's not a salvation issue, any more than the "option" of directly buying salvation made that not a salvation issue in the previous strip. |

Yeaaaaaaah...
You're both coming down to the point of technicalities where it can bend either way. |

ok - as i see it, the joke of the strip is, he goes to the atm to get cash, and instead gets a demand to turn over all his cash to god (or the machine). which is funny, because it's him. he's being offered the choice of starving or going to hell.
now as to deeper meanings:
note that the atm is not offering salvation for the "right" choice - it is offering damnation for the "wrong" one. which is a different thing than offering salvation for a fee, as the first machine did. the atm is forcing seymour to admit he's a horrible awful person if he is lacking in the smallest way. and he does remain human enough to know he can't meet that standard - he still wants to eat and buy stuff and, well, yes, be a materialistic whore (although he would be buying god-stuff).
i think his fanboyishness comes out in his urge to aquiring the trappings of god-loving, not in a true desire to give up everything to serve god. _________________ aka: neverscared! |
