I guess what I really want to know is if someone who specializes in, say, dialysis, is better off than someone who is an rn or lpn.

i'd have to guess "yes", but i think we're all getting together for thanksgiving. i'll chat her up then, if you can wait, get a general rundown on "what's it like being a nurse" for ya.

Well RM, there is a nursing school in pittsburgh...one of the best in the nation....

But whatever. I salute you for making it out of Pittsburgh alive, and I commend your 5 years aboard the HRMS Sinfest Forum. Bang up job, RM. Bang up job.

well, there certainly is a demand for nurses, and (depending on your training) it's the sort of field where you should be able to work anywhere you want (anywhere in the country, i mean). i think pay rate does depend pretty heavily on what field you are in, as well as (probably) what part of the country. for the rest of it, i would think it would depend on your feelings about the area you go into - but it sounds like you already know quite a bit about the areas you are interested in, so you aren't going to be floored by the specific needs (or odd behaviors) of the mentally handicapped.

good luck with the new life - hope this five years works out better than the last five.

I know it isn't exactly kosher to say, but I have always felt a certain affinity or empathy for the mentally handicapped.

the next five years could not possibly suck worse. I wouldn't make it.

empathy is good - and as to affinity, maybe you are more sensitive than most of us allow ourselves to be to the knowledge that it can be a pretty small step from "normal" to "mentally handicapped". i think a lot of us are too scared to think it could happen to us, and the easiest way to deal with that is to distance ourselves.

that is very true, though the step is not one often traversed post birth. that is to say, we are set in our natures at an early and indeterminant point. however, the differences are not, I think, great, and many similarities exist between both sides of the coin.
