So the window saga continues. Apparently I'm not actually a giant wuss and it is legitimately broken! Who knew!

Anyway, I broke down and called the maintenance man because my fire alarm randomly decided to go into "hush" mode and not come out. Between that chirping every minute and feeling like I'm going to melt any second I just gave up.

He couldn't fix the window though, he's coming back on Monday.

I think you might mean Kadena.

That explains why fritter knew the answer - he's kanedian.

Apparently there's been a rash of break-ins in my neighborhood. Daylight (while people are at work), by teenagers (because school's out). We have a ton of giant, low windows and single-pane, glass backdoors, as well as the usual long window right by the front door. Moving, getting a dog, and putting bars on the windows are all infeasible.

What do? I mean, besides finally investing in that safe I've been meaning to buy, and giving insurance an inventory of everything interesting.

Set up your computer to loudly play recordings of the same dog barking in various ways at random intervals. If you get your hands on the recordings, it's easy enough to schedule the recordings without any additional software. You can probably even incorporate something like this to play the recording whenever there is a loud noise.

It's all just bluster, but it's cheap and may be enough of a deterrent.

Cheap alarms hooked up to the windows too? Not hooked up to a monitoring system but something that just sets off a loud noise like this http://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-Wireless-Door-and-Window-Alarm-Kit-51107/100236900#.UbZqYPnVCSo

I am not advocating that - it was what came up on google.

That way, when you lie tossing and turning in bed, trying to sleep despite the carefully calculated cacophony of canines, there's always a small chance someone will toss a stake in your face before robbing your house

yay stake!
