I have one, but it's only ever brought me unwanted e-mail.

Well, if nothing else it put me back in touch with one of my favorite professors/advisers of all time. So, that's a win.

That's stunning. Tell me more about your email contact list.

Amazing! So you keep in touch with all the people you like, always and forever, once they're in your email contact list? Your email contact list must be more advanced than mine.

it's easier to email them out-of-the-blue with something relevant to them than it is to join a social networking site

Yeah, I'm not really sure why we're talking about this. We fell out of touch, and joining LinkedIn (and its intrusive listing of all my friends/contacts) was a prompt to get back in touch. If that seems odd to you, I can't help you.

I would like one of these magical address books that somehow provides me with the contact information of people whose contact information I have lost or deleted. Having such technology certainly would defeat the need to hope you'll randomly find someone whom you have no current way of contacting.

How do I block specific posters from showing for me? I remember people have posted about it from time to time, but am not having luck with the search engine.

This greasemonkey script to ignore users might work. I tried it long ago and it worked then, but I haven't used it in recent years.

ok, i admit it, i am sort of a dinosaur with all this stupid computer stuff; when they don't behave for me i am restricted to just pawing at it with my big hoofy feet and threatening to eat it. or something.

so: i bought a new laptop, primarily for web-surfing sorts of stuff. i got adblocker and malwarebytes. every chance i get, i tell it i don't want nasty spam advertising.

and i'm still having to spend so much time dealing with the damn ads it's making me insane. also, malwarebytes tells me like every 10 seconds it's blocking the same damn malware.

what i'm getting are popup ads coming up from the bottom and the side, and also some adware thing showing up in windows (like, for example, sinfest forums). the ones at the bottom have this little wheel deal that i can click on and tell it i don't want it to bother me for some period of time, and i think it's the ones in windows that tells me it's a program i can uninstall (except the program it lists isn't in my list of programs to uninstall - it's top-something; i do have something with a little wheel icon called 'drivers', but that's a little scare to uninstall).

so - do i need to blitz my current copy of firefox? (i've already redone it like 3 times) is there something else i can download that will let me say DIE DIE IN A FIRE DIE FOREVER to all spam ads? i have never, ever had this much trouble with ads. my old laptop has never had these; it doesn't get them when firefox updates, and it isn't nearly as protected as the new one. anyone know what the deal is? i haven't put much on the new one yet because this is so annoying, so i can be pretty radical at fixing things.

Are you doing regular malware scans, or just telling MB to block stuff online?

Uninstall MB because it sucks. Go get Avast! instead. Ininstall Firefox, reinstall and search for the Firefox add-on Ghostery and AdBlockPlus. Will stop all pop ups and ads for every site forever. Both allow you to green list sites you wish to allow ads and popups for.

i haven't heard of ghostery - anyone else have an opinion on it? i do have adblockplus, but it really doesn't seem to be helping with the popups - i try to click on them to filter them out, but the address it gives me that it will be blocking always seems to be that for the website i'm trying to look at - so i'm not sure if this is ads the companies are putting up, or something that manages to attach to them, or what the deal is.

i have to say, malwarebytes won me over quickly because it immediately removed a batch of stuff that macafee seems to have let on...
