Yep, I'd go with the flow then. She can put it on repeat if she wants it to keep going. Smile

i agree. 35-45 min is pretty good for a sampler; anything longer might be slightly overwhelming.

How am I supposed to get to the next episode in Candy Crush when only one of my facebook friends is responding to my requests?

Get new friends. Obviously.

I am going to London on the 21th of next month. I need to book a hotel that won't break my economy, which is in a bit of state since I managed to get robbed in december (see the Little Horror's thread), but simultaneously won't be a rathole? Not that I have high standards or anything, but a friend is coming over so I'd feel bad if I booked somewhere horrible.

Related question: Anything I must see while in London? Don't worry I've already got visiting the Highgate Cemetery planned, Karl Marx and Douglas Adams will be there.

Edit: so I found a decent hotel. The other question is still open though.

So here's something that's been bothering me a while. I'm writing on a fantasy fiction (mostly for myself) and what I usually do whenever I get to a new place I take a real word and mix up letters. Often I do a bit of google-fu and put stuff together that sounds okay for me.

But it makes my names very varied. I have a mish mash of arabic, egyptian, mexican, japanese, scandinavian and greek sounding names for cities and countries, races and titles.

Would that bother people (for when I plan to stick this stuff on tumblr) and would it be better to stick to one country for the style? If I chose arabic or spanish, would that bring its own set of problems (culture clash/ignorance etc)? Should I go fuck it and accept criticism on the moment it's given to me by someone who knows better?

I don't think I quite understand what you're describing yet.. Are you basing the fantasy-places on the word-mashups or are you building 'em from scratch and just using the word mashups for names?

Using real places as settings for fantasy stuff is a little like playing with fire when you haven't been to any of them, but at the same time that doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't. I think there's a lot of mixed feelings about it, but if you're planning on posting it on tumblr that's a pretty good place to get a lot of varied feedback. Generally speaking I think the consensus has come down to "Lots and lots and LOTS of research and for gods sake don't just build it off of terrible stereotypes" combined with accepting criticism without getting defensive (and actually using the criticism to improve of course.)

I'm building them from scratch and using them as names.

I do my best to avoid complete correlations to real world countries. It's easier to create a whole new history that way to. Unfortunately it's impossible to completely seperate it. Which is why I want to be sure that what I'm doing is not just another ignorant white person move.

The most difficult thing will be that I'm writing everyone as poc when I'm only half (and mostly raised white). I have no doubt that at some point my ignorance will blip through even when I'm trying to make them round complex people. When that happens I hope tumblr will point me to it so I can change that. :3

edit: I probably am making a bit of a big deal out of nothing tbh. I probably will edit this thing about 5 million years more before I post it anywhere. Curse you performance anxiety.

I'll say this: inconsistency interferes with a good willing suspension of disbelief. If the the towns in the Fufrau Kingdom are named Blecksberg, Deldurf, Feddlesmeer, Zimberg, and Ichinisenoko then it's easy to see what might trip people up, but it's a non-issue in the neighboring Hoohah Kingdom with the towns of Gilderburg, Yokomomo, Daleville, Ransalem, and Koolooka all co-exist.

Also, geography influences history and culture, not the other way around. For almost all of human history, until a few hundred years ago, people mostly born, lived and died within 10 miles (16 Kilometers) of the same spot.

I've been meaning to fully flesh out its history. I might do that this weekend.

Also the hoohah kingdom sounds very exciting.

How do I tell who is winning the superbowl? I do not know anything about football, and googling it gave me stats I don't understand.

Go on Facebook and see who is happier: the people with blue/green logos as their profile picture, or the people with orange/blue logos. I bet I could tell you what was going on just from my news feed. Every play gets posted by 10 different people.

I had thought people in my Facebook feed would post a play by play, but I guess they are too busy watching the game.

you're not missing much anyway. at the moment it's 43-8 Seattle with about nine minutes left. it looks like Seattle is starting to put the backups in and just running out the clock, and that's how you know it's over.

The screaming of the neighbors let me know the game was over.

Something happened to a person named Sherman. Someone named Manning did some things other people thought were bad ideas. Professor Xavier did some pushups while Magneto cried... and then I think there were doberhuahuas and everyone went home.
