Prepositions, ordinals, punctuation and spacing, please.

The 27th of November, 2006.

No thanks... I'm trying to quit.

You do see that there is a whole extra word in the way you want us to say it, right? (At least. If you also want us to say "The" at the beginning, you're asking us for two syllables.)

27th OF November, 2006

whereas it is briefer to say

November 27th, 2006

So, if you're going for brevity and have less syllables to say, then you're going to want to go with the American format.

No, not laziness. Efficiency!

Those extra syllables can be put to much better use in any of the following ways:

"Fuck you"
"Asshole"
"Douchebag"

There are plenty of options out there, but I'm sure my point is demonstrated... Conserve those syllables for when they're truly needed.

So you're advocating that we stop using: "It's the 27th of November" in favour of "Fuck you, it's November 27, douchebag"?

That's actually common practice in New Jersey, actually.

Except we'd say November 27th. Smile

You'd be surprised at how many Americans prefer this technique. After moving to new york, I found that its the cool thing to say it that way.

Yup, it's the American way. I've never understood it myself, but surely you must have seen it around? Like everything American, it's just so damned common nowadays.

Basically, Noah Webster decided to create a number of arbitrary spellings different from the British to be American. Same type of thing with date, spellings, manners of saying things, etc.

I wrote it that way because it's the first method that came to me.

On the matter of why, well, I think it goes like this:
"Pssh, we all know the year at least, 'cuz there's a party between 'em all. We'll save that for the end. Put the month first, because it sucks to suddenly realize it's actually December after you've already written '30', and then the day can sit in the middle because that's the only space left."

Or, what everyone else said.

ick, i hate that - this guy i work with names data files that way (so data collected today would be in 27nov2006.dat) - and it's such a pain to figure out what data i've got, because it sorts by the day, rather than month or year.

although now that i think about it, when i write dates, i always put the day first...but that's _writing_, who worries about sorting writing?

way to be contrary.
