|

Well, I have to say that the poetry contest was a modest success. We have some very nice entries here and I am sure this will be one of the toughest calls you will be ever be err . . . called on . . . to make. Best of luck to our contestants, and remember, no ballot stuffing (this isnt the f'n sinnys for chirst sake)

The night was dark light.
The air carried sickly fright.
woke to cut the throats.
Michael
ouch.
stop that.

Feeling kinda Emo
The Black Pain
Pressing in
Suffocating me
I cry
I bleed
Save me
But don't
mess up
my hair!
It took me
hours to
get it in
this
flippy-thing!
Major Tom
JUDGED?
screw that, i'm too sad and important.
nathan
My soul bleeds like a stuck pig.
You will never see your own hands which are red as wet red blood,
because they are covered in my blood, which I bled. On you.
Can you taste the stench? Are you sickened by it?
Yes. My soul is like that. If my soul were cheese, it would be limburger.
Why did you refuse my limburger love?
My love, you snickered at me because I wore black that was as dark as a black night,
but you didn't see my shattered soul, and how my pain and solitudeness was so
much darker than those black painted tears, that they were not black, but white in comparison to the darkness
of my love. For you.
Those black tears drowned me.
Can you touch, now that I am gone, my soft cheeks which are whiter than $4.97 Face Powder #3 from Rite-Aid?
Or are they too white for your soulless soul?
My memory will haunt you like a ghost in the night.
I will become a ghost of rejection: you will forever haunt me.
And what of those long hours we two spent spending time beside the cemetary plots plotting our own beautiful ends
together, rejoicing in the sweet agony of a death that approaches like a stranger that is coming toward you?
By the time you read this crumpled note covered in the tears
of two sleepless nights in a row,
I'll be a hellbound ship with you in tow,
or a lost dog in the last pen at the pound, awaiting the needle with nowhere to go.
Yes, my dear, our sweet black love has curdled.
I am now hurdling myself over the ledge of sixteen aspirin:
one for each year you were blind to my suffering, which has been eternal
every day of my life. I will now fly away, your tragic dove
fallen from the sky so high above.
Why did you refuse my limburger love?
casinopete
what have you wrought?
a miasma of agony as affections twist.
once we savored heaven,
wide-eyed and untainted,
but your heart perished.
a feverish throng of memory -
tears follow bitterness, follow bitterness,
love dissolved.
in a torrent of tears,
i condemn you.
Usagi Miyamoto
Beneath the gathered aubergine of dusk
And at the setting of the slivered Moon
I awake and rise to inhale the musk
Of fires spent, to hear the night owl's tune.
On rooftops edges the gargoyles keep
Their own counsel as I ponder my fate
Keyed to the darkness while unbidden sleep
Steals away hours at terminal rate
From the fortunate dwellers of the light
Of the day. We must gather our living
While promising forbidden dreams delight
We drink deep and pretend they are willing.
Satisfied Lilith rises, as do I,
Giving thanks we shake out our wings and fly.

i bleed.....
so that
my shadow is nourished
we all
are flies
spewing vomit on the trashcan that is life.

On what sort of criteria are we supposed to vote?
nathan's is the most over-the-top, and in my opinion the funniest, but Usagi's, in being more convincing and genuine-sounding, satirizes the genre most powerfully by simply being itself. |

I voted for Usagi because I was under the impression they were supposed to be Goth, NOT emo.

I also thought it was really well written. |

this is not intended as campaigning! promise! ...but usagi's is Romantic, a la Keats.
not really goth.
now don't go jumping down my throat here; Romanticism was of course one of the many sources for victorian gothic, but victorian gothic, as i see it, ain't really goth.
as in, usagi's is too good to be goth. |

Dude. Voting on poetry is so painfully wrong. Even just fucking around, like this, the whole idea of winners and losers completely negates the creative exercise itself.
I hereby withdraw my poem from the "contest," and shake my finger very super duper condemningly at this whole thread.
Also, Tom wins. _________________ All our final decisions are made in a state of mind that is not going to last. - Marky Mark Proust |

| mine was so totally Goth. Notice how the minimalist style reflects the starkness of the night. Also, the poem goes from being hurt (emo, but it could happen to anyone) to complaining (emo) to comments on the night (goth, but possibly emo) much faster than traditional emo allows. (excess) Loathing and self-pity don't come in to it at all. And to top it all of "In the night" is clearly a description of the world surrounding the protagonist and not the actual author himself which is SO TOTALLY NOT EMO. |

I sort of assumed that this thread was for taking the piss. I dress goth sometimes, which gives me great pleasure; it also gives me great pleasure to ridicule the subculture.</highhorse>
EDIT: The HTML checker automatically deletes the second word in two-word commands. I *know* high horse has a space in it.
P.S. I really like your poem, Usagi, which is rare. I guess it has something to do with you writing a bit like Keats. I love Keats. He's, um, about the only poet I unreservedly love. So bouncyhappy kudos to you. |

I liked Usagi's but it was vampire, not goth. I ended up voting for Nathan. BTW, what is the real difference between goth and emo? Seems to me it's that the emo's are more energetic in their despair. What else? _________________

Emo.
Think fuzzy sweaters, courderoy pants, square dark framed glasses, not a ton of eyeliner, "How could this happen to me!?" attitude.
Goth.
Think vampires, zombie lovers, gargoyles, creatures of the night, black clothes with sharp things in or on them, "No one understand the mystery and darkness of me." attitude. _________________ A person's character is their destiny. |
