I haven't started watching it. Some how, learning the innerworkings of meerkat society doesn't seem to be a pressing issue in my life at the moment. _________________ Live to laugh. |

| i think they anthropomorphize a little too much and the editing might be a little tight, to make the day-in-the-life seem more eventful than it is, but i've always been a sucker for an observational nature show, especially when it touches on animal sociology. |

I love the show.
And for those of you who feel like the personification goes a bit too far (assuming one of the meercats is feeling a particular emotion), then I say that you are also making the assumption that they're not having those emotions.
Not to say they are.
Just be able to watch the animals without judging them one way or another. The fact is, they're social creatures unrelated to apes like ourselves. It's absolutely fascinating.
From an article I found on Fark a few days ago:
Meercats have been seen actually teaching their young--not just having the young learn by observation, but by actually doing things like removing the stinger from a scorpion in order to let the little ones play with it to learn how to handle their prey.
There is a dominant female matriarch in every family (consisting of about 30), and no other female is allowed to mate. If they do, they risk losing their young to infanticide.
So yeah... It's a good show. _________________ What is the protocol for filing with the media that I've seen Jesus in your mother's right nipple? |

the voiceover stuff was a bit annoyign at times, so i turned the volume down a little while i surfed the internet. the little creatures are fun to watch, though. _________________ On Twitter

I like the show. Meerkats are pretty adorable and I don't mind the anthropomorphizing, it beats having no voiceover. The only problem is that whenever we watch it (and it seems like the only shows on Animal Planet when I'm home are Animal Cops and Meerkat Manor) Xilo latches onto my arm and and coos and asks if we can get a baby meerkat. _________________ "Worse comes to worst, my people come first, but my tribe lives on every country on earth. It's good clean educational television.
Frankly, the fact that it showcases fairly complex behavioral dynamics in a non-human social animal is the best part to me. A lot of people simply don't realize how intelligent and complex our animal counterparts are. _________________ "Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid" ~ SGT John Stryker from "Sands of Iwo Jima". |
