The last few strips lambasted religious leaders who demand payment from their flocks in exchange for a bill of salvation. I think we would have a near-consensus that such practices are bad.
This strip mocks people who deliberately choose ignorance. For Seymour this is because his zeal blinds and deafens him, but it applies to non-religious people as well.
In both cases, it is clear Tat has problems with specific kinds of people who are often linked with religion, not with religion itself. I think his very respectful and often insightful treatment of the God character makes this quite clear. |
I thought of Scientology all of a sudden. *jumps repeatedly on top of a couch*
As far as the comic itself: err, couldn't have said it better than what was quoted above... |

Am I the only one who noticed the clear parallels between the strip and the story of Adam and Eve? I mean, the devil was in a tree, for crying out loud! _________________ "Whatever afflicts thee, their asses I shall kick"

I'm reminded of Nancy Reagan's Just Say No campaign and, to a lesser extent, the episode of That's My Bush with Laura Bush's You'd Have to Be High to Do Drugs campaign. |

Hey, we'll get off the religion topics once Tatsuya's got whatever-it-is out of his system...
Also, might I suggest people use 'organized religion' to denote churches, priests, zealots, and all that jazz? If you just use 'religion' all over, it's kinda easy to mix up your point's focus, since 'religion' also covers belief in a higher being and a method of living. Just saying... |

This is why people didn't talk much about the comic on the old boards. _________________ A person's character is their destiny. |

I recall wandering into those old forums one day, saw someone had made a comment on the comic, and everybody (and I do mean everybody) took turns flaming him into oblivion. And they weren't even pissed over what he said. They were pissed that he dared to mention the Sinfest comic on the Sinfest forums. [sarcasm] Yeah, real beautiful, man. [/sarcasm] I'm quite surprised Tatsuya never did a comic mocking that behavior. Because it was so freakin' ripe, man. And he'd've had you dead to rights, just like he's got organized religion dead to rights now. |

First, thank you for denoting your sarcasm with those handy tags. I would never have detected it otherwise.
Second, while I can't know just how long ago the events you've described occurred, I can say that in the entire time I posted on the old forums, I never once saw someone flamed for talking about the comic. I have seen plenty of people flamed for making stupid comments on the comic, or for complaining about a lack of updates, but I can't imagine someone being attacked for having something interesting and worthwhile to say. We are intolerant of stupidity and pointlessness masquerading as discussion, not discussion of Sinfest itself.

Write a comic mocking that behavior?
I daresay that he may have encouraged it. _________________ Scire aliquid laus est, pudor est non discere velle
