|
|
The premise: A strange malady has struck the universe, and all knowledge of the text of Shakespeare's works has been eradicated. People who used to know every line of the play cannot remember even one of them, not even the names of the performances. All reference has mysteriously been eradicated, vanished from pages and computers and all forms of media. Everyone is wandering around, keenly aware of the person known as Shakespeare, and they remember that he was perhaps the most important writer in the history of the world. They just can't find his works, or remember them anymore. All they have is cruel hints, such as half-constructed sets and costume closets for plays they were previously preparing to perform, vanished playbooks and empty spaces in libraries, and strangely blank sections of textbooks and history books.
But one complete copy was left unscathed. This last remaining source of Shakespeare's collected works are sitting comfortably in a burning building. Elsewhere in the building is an anonymous human being of indeterminate age and origin.
The universe, in its inexplicable wisdom, has decided to make it so you only have time to save one while the other perishes. Will you save the human being and leave the world without Shakespeare, or will you sacrifice the human and recover the bard's tales?
Please explain your answer. |

Everyone? Keenly aware? Is their interest an additional magical effect of whatever made Shakespeare disappear? _________________ "To love deeply in one direction makes us more loving in all others."

One human life is easily more valuable to me than any number of letters on a paper.
I'd choose to save the human being obviously. Not that Shakespeare isn't worth saving or anything but in reality it all comes down to the fact that its words a dead guy wrote on paper.
Plays from Greece and Rome have been lost as the centuries go by but humanity remains. Melodramatic example sure but it fits.
I'd go so far as to say i'd personally burn the last copy of Shakespeare and throw the ashes into the Grand Canyon if it meant someone's life. _________________

The Collected Works of Shakespeare, of course.
I mean, there are 6 billion humans on the goddamn planet. And we are already growing too fast. So I will do humanity a favor AND save a cultural heritage of immense importance.

| The human being. Cause I'm nice and not an intellectual snob. And because I can then write some of the Shakespeare as my own and make money cause no one remembers it anyone. |

Hm. If I didn't know you live in Germany, I'd think you were a Republican. It's good to see that other countries we've imposed our way of life upon are fully embracing our capitalist bullshit.
Sorry. That's probably egotistical "GO AMURCA" crap. I'm sure other countries are fully capable of spewing capitalist bullshit on their own.
/nonsensical rant. Pardon me, not quite concsious yet, and grumpy about it.
As for the situation, I don't accept that it's an either or. Black and white situations don't exist. ^^; I likely wouldn't be strong enough to carry a person out of a flaming building, but If I could get them out, I would, and then I'd run back in for the Shakespeare. If I couldn't, I'd grab the Shakespeare, run out and alert the trained firemen to the person's whereabouts. _________________ Live to laugh.

Then why would I even look twice at it... I wouldn't remember its significance either.

That's rather where I was going to try to go with my question. If no one remembers the content of the works, only their "significance," it would be a pretty hollow and false significance. _________________ "To love deeply in one direction makes us more loving in all others."

| You say that like that's wrong - it's the entire premise behind advertising and it works on humans. Oh, you must be the ones 'beyond that'. |

Yes I do.

I'd like to think I'm "beyond that" when the issue is saving a life rather than deciding on a brand of jeans. _________________ "To love deeply in one direction makes us more loving in all others."
