Tatsuya swooping in and getting rid of the crapflooding pretty much put an end to the issue. The rare circumstances where moderation will not blow ass in principle and execution are already handled.

The only thing that saves forums from trolls is anonymity. And I sincerely doubt these forums are going to stay anonymous. Getting away from keenspace will help.

I've modded a relatively small (~18000 users, no idea how many active ones) forum. We haven't had a lot of problems with trolls, and we stomped out any flame wars that arose pretty early. That was pretty much it, other than that we don't do squat besides make sure posts go in the right sub-forum. Less is more, and mods who don't powertrip are worth their weight in gold.

We have surprisingly few flame wars around these parts. I think it has to do with the fact that most of our regular users are relatively intelligent and can form much more persuasive arguments (and more subtle insults) than you'd find in a typical flaming... black hole vaginas notwithstanding. Wink

Of course, it could also be said that flaming is pretty much a way of life around here (in so many ways - I'm looking at you, Benny!) and stupidity is not suffered lightly... so maybe we're just meaner and tougher than those other little girly forums.

It depends on the person really. Some people would moderate fairly and everyone would be happy and other people would let the power go to the had and as stated above become complete assholes.

But from what I have observed here so far, I don't think we would have the second problem.
